Chapter Twenty-One: The Fly
Jiang Xiaotian, after all, was still a young man, and the sensation of driving a supercar was simply exhilarating. Along the way, his return rate was especially high, but half the people were looking at the car, while the other half were looking at Ling’er.
Men on the street were incredibly envious—luxury cars and beautiful women, these were the ultimate goals of a lifetime.
Who would have guessed that the driver was, in fact, merely a driver!
When it came time to eat, Jiang Xiaotian was unceremonious and drove straight to Old Street. He had taken on this identity at great risk—if he didn’t make full use of it, wouldn’t that be a waste?
Brother Long naturally took the initiative to welcome Jiang Xiaotian. When he saw Ling’er and the sports car, he was even more impressed by Jiang Xiaotian.
“And this is…?” Brother Long asked politely.
“This is my senior sister. Our master has passed away, so it’s only natural we return together,” Jiang Xiaotian made up a story offhand; otherwise, it would be inappropriate to bring a woman along to pay respects to his master.
With this explanation, Brother Long was reassured and treated Ling’er with equal politeness.
Despite its name, Old Street did not mean its facilities were outdated. On the contrary, thanks to Brother Long’s management, there were actually some rather upscale establishments. It was just those small roadside eateries that were left unattended.
“I’ll make arrangements for you. I still have business to attend to, so I can’t personally host you two. Once you’ve eaten your fill, we can set off. I’ll call you then, how’s that?” Brother Long asked carefully.
Jiang Xiaotian nodded; this suited him perfectly. He didn’t want to bring that bald guy along anyway—it would have been awkward.
Brother Long breathed a sigh of relief. He was a businessman and couldn’t afford to idle about. Seeing Jiang Xiaotian so willing to give him face, he respected him all the more.
Following Ling’er’s request, Brother Long arranged for a Western restaurant.
The environment inside was very clean, the dishes not only delicious but also abundant and beautifully presented—the favorite of young people, frequented even by wealthy heirs.
Ling’er had never eaten Western food before and was naturally full of curiosity, especially when it came to steak. She was dumbfounded: “This little piece? It isn’t even enough to fill the gap between my teeth! And it’s so expensive—how much meat could you buy for that money?”
Despite her complaints, she was the one who ate the most.
Jiang Xiaotian understood this woman better now; to her, meat was not just food, but a unit of measurement.
Truth be told, Jiang Xiaotian himself had never eaten such fare.
In the past, he often didn’t know if he’d have a next meal. Even during the holidays, he rarely treated himself at a restaurant, let alone these ridiculously expensive Western dishes.
So neither of them paid any attention to etiquette, eating like starving ghosts.
“Oh heavens, I’m losing my appetite,” suddenly, a sharp female voice rang out.
Jiang Xiaotian looked up and was momentarily stunned.
Across from them, at some point, sat several women heavily made up, and among them was Chu Ran.
As for the man with his back to Jiang Xiaotian, there was no need to guess—it had to be Chen Kai.
He didn’t turn around, a napkin draped around his neck, one hand holding a knife, the other a fork, slowly slicing off a small piece of steak and placing it onto Chu Ran’s plate.
“Steak must be savored slowly. The reason it’s small is because all the essence is concentrated. Only by chewing slowly can you taste its brilliance.” He seemed to be explaining to the girls, but was really speaking for Jiang Xiaotian and Ling’er to hear.
The girls laughed, “Ah, so envious of little Chu for finding a boyfriend who is cultured, handsome, and rich!”
Chen Kai even acted humble: “No, no, compared to Jiang Xiaotian behind me, I’m nowhere near as wealthy.”
The girls were stunned, but what Chen Kai said next made them laugh so hard they could hardly breathe: “He’s truly favored by the heavens—he won the lottery, millions! If it were me, I’d invest or start a business, but our President Jiang is different; he bought a sports car just like that. So flashy!”
The group laughed non-stop; Jiang Xiaotian was genuinely frustrated.
Why did he keep running into them? Was there a GPS installed on him?
But his mindset had changed somewhat from before, so he couldn’t be bothered to argue. He simply ignored them—once he finished eating, he would leave. There was no point in bickering with these people.
Yet, his silence only made Chen Kai think he was afraid. The face he lost last time at the car dealership, he had to find a way to reclaim it.
“By the way, Jiang Xiaotian, do you know what kind of steak you’re eating?” Chen Kai smiled brightly.
“I don’t know what I’m eating, but I do know you’re eating that pile of crap,” Jiang Xiaotian replied with a smile.
Chen Kai’s expression froze. At their table, someone was eating curry, and in an instant, their appetite vanished. They looked at Jiang Xiaotian with fury.
“Are you insane? Talking like that while others are eating—are all nouveau riche as uncultured as you?” a girl scolded.
Compared to Chen Kai, Jiang Xiaotian really did come off as rough—a country bumpkin, irritating just to look at.
Jiang Xiaotian glanced at Ling’er; she didn’t care at all, focused on eating, her phone propped up beside her playing videos. “You fight your own battles, just don’t drag me in.”
“I’d like to say, if you think having a bit of money makes you something special, you’re sorely mistaken. How does it feel to be wandering, renting a room?” Chen Kai suddenly smiled sinisterly.
Jiang Xiaotian was confused—he had no idea what Chen Kai was talking about.
Seeing Jiang Xiaotian’s silence, Chen Kai grew even more pleased: “I think you’ve guessed who smashed your home, haven’t you? You really are like a fly—wherever I go, you turn up. It’s truly annoying. Sometimes, I wish you’d just disappear from this world.”
As he spoke, he took a sip of red wine.
Jiang Xiaotian cringed at the sight—it was as if Chen Kai thought he was some tyrannical CEO.
“Oh, since you mentioned it…” Jiang Xiaotian picked up a jug of water from the table and poured it over Chen Kai, soaking him completely.
Accompanied by screams, Chen Kai was drenched, staring at Jiang Xiaotian in disbelief, his gaze ice-cold and terrifying.
“Are you crazy, Jiang Xiaotian? If it weren’t for our past relationship, Brother Kai would have taken you out long ago, you know that?” Chu Ran was startled and hurried to help Chen Kai wipe off.
The girls around them cursed, while Chen Kai calmly took out his phone. “You know, you’re finished. You may not understand whose turf this is, but today, you’ll be kneeling.”
He dialed a number, then sat back down, regaining his smile. “Keep eating, it’s fine. Just wait for the show.”
Not long after, a group of thuggish-looking men walked in from the entrance.
Chen Kai immediately stood up, “Brother Monkey, look, who do we have here?”
