Chapter Fifty-One: Give It All You've Got
Jiang Xiaotian stood there in a daze, then walked out again to check the room number. He hadn’t gone to the wrong place. Without thinking, he rushed to the director’s office to ask what was going on.
Unexpectedly, the director seemed even more confused than he was.
“Mr. Jiang? You don’t know? Miss Ye was picked up by her parents—her birth parents, in fact. Didn’t they notify you? Well, that’s understandable, she left in quite a hurry and asked me to leave a letter for you.” The director took an envelope out of the drawer.
Jiang Xiaotian’s hands trembled as he took it, his mind in turmoil, utterly confused—why would Ye Wan’er leave without a word?
Suddenly he remembered all her strange behaviors the previous day, and his anxiety deepened.
Did her family really come for her?
He hastily opened the letter, only to be stunned.
Inside was a single piece of paper and a bank card.
The handwriting was delicate but seemed weak, and the content was like a heavy hammer pounding his heart.
“I’ve gone home. Don’t worry about me. Thank you. This money is what I owe you.”
Below was a string of numbers—he didn’t need to guess; it was the bank card number.
Jiang Xiaotian thanked the director and walked out in silence.
He stopped in the hallway, suddenly feeling completely lost.
Ye Wan’er had gone back home?
So, the Ye Wan’er he had risked his life to save, in the end, left him only a cold, emotionless bank card?
He leaned against the wall, not angry, but overwhelmed with an indescribable frustration.
Jiang Xiaotian read the letter over and over, but it really was that simple: money, and a single line of thanks.
In that moment, his last bit of hope faded away.
He sank to the floor, burying his head in his arms, wanting to cry but unable to shed a single tear.
Because Ye Wan’er had returned home—that was a good thing, and all he had ever wanted was for her to be well.
Hadn’t he said just yesterday, once she recovered, he would send her home?
Now she was gone—why did it hurt so much?
But why had she left without saying goodbye?
He wandered back to the hospital room, gazing at the empty space, feeling as if a piece of his own heart had been hollowed out.
Moving like a robot, Jiang Xiaotian entered and sat on Ye Wan’er’s former bed, staring blankly at the sunlight beyond the window.
How many times had he and Ye Wan’er watched the moonlight together, feeling it so cold and lonely? Now, looking into the sunlight, it felt even more piercing than the moon.
With a sigh, Jiang Xiaotian realized he had crumpled the envelope in his hand.
He looked at the bank card again and couldn’t help but let out a bitter laugh.
“Jiang Xiaotian, aren’t you supposed to be greedy? Why aren’t you happy now? Ye Wan’er is a wealthy heiress, the money she gave you couldn’t possibly be little, right?” he muttered to himself.
He didn’t know how long he had sat there before a hesitant voice sounded behind him.
“Brother Tian? Why are you here… Where’s Sister Wan’er?”
Qin Lulu was also taken aback.
“She’s gone… Heard her parents took her,” Jiang Xiaotian replied calmly, though his tone was filled with bitterness.
“So sudden? Are you sure it was her parents?” Qin Lulu frowned deeply.
Jiang Xiaotian nodded wearily. Not only could only family members take her away, but the letter proved everything—the handwriting was unmistakably Ye Wan’er’s.
Qin Lulu still found it hard to believe, but seeing the empty room, she had no choice but to accept it.
“What’s going on? I thought we were all good friends now, and she just left without a word? That’s not like Sister Wan’er at all. Are you sure it was her family? Wasn’t she here just last night? Who would take such a weak patient home in the middle of the night?” Qin Lulu grumbled.
Her words struck a chord with Jiang Xiaotian.
Yes, Ye Wan’er wasn’t the type to leave without saying goodbye. In fact, there had been signs yesterday—he just hadn’t noticed.
Ever since she took that phone call, she had been acting strangely, her mood unstable. But if she was really in trouble, Ye Wan’er wouldn’t have just left without a word.
“It must have been her family. There’s no doubt about that, but…”
Could it be that her relationship with her family wasn’t very good?
That was the only explanation Jiang Xiaotian could come up with. If she had wanted to leave, it should have been a happy occasion.
He had grown up an orphan—if his parents could have come to take care of him when he was sick, he would have been overjoyed.
Jiang Xiaotian pondered. Did she have some kind of difficulty that forced her to leave?
But why was she always so stubborn, shouldering every problem alone?
Especially when he thought of last night’s kiss, and the tracks of her tears, Jiang Xiaotian was even more certain—she would never have left so resolutely.
Ye Wan’er must be facing some trouble!
Thinking of this, he hesitated no longer and stood up immediately.
Qin Lulu quickly grabbed him. “Hey, hey! Where are you going?”
“Isn’t it obvious? I’m going to find Wan’er! She definitely has her reasons. Even if she really doesn’t want anything to do with us anymore, she should say it to our faces, right? Leaving a bank card—does she think so little of me?”
If you really wanted to cut ties, why did you kiss me last night?
Jiang Xiaotian spoke with a sense of righteous indignation, ready to throw the bank card away.
“That looks like a diamond card. I’ve seen one before—you need at least a seven-figure balance to get one,” Qin Lulu remarked after inspecting it.
Jiang Xiaotian discreetly withdrew his hand and put the card back in his pocket. “Hmph! I’ll keep it for now and return it to her myself!”
Qin Lulu tutted, her gaze full of disdain.
“Brother Tian, my advice is, don’t meddle in other people’s family affairs. As the saying goes, even the wisest judge can’t resolve household disputes. If this really is Sister Wan’er’s family matter, it’s not your place to intervene. She knew she had to leave after that phone call last night—she didn’t tell you because she didn’t want you to show up.”
Qin Lulu adjusted her glasses, sounding quite reasonable.
Jiang Xiaotian’s bravado faded, but he couldn’t simply sit back and do nothing.
He first called Han Yue, hoping to learn more about Ye Wan’er’s family, but even her best friend only knew that her family was wealthy and that she seldom went home or kept in touch. As for where exactly her family was from, that was a mystery.
With his only lead gone, Jiang Xiaotian collapsed onto the bed. Even if he wanted to search for her, it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack—in such a vast country, how could he find one person?
Qin Lulu, being a girl, offered her own perspective. “After all these days together, the way Sister Wan’er treats you is completely different from how she treats the rest of us. She might leave us without a word, but to you? Never! So I think, once she’s settled her family matters, she’ll definitely come back to find you.”
Is a life-saving debt really something that can be repaid with money?
Maybe it can, but Qin Lulu was certain Ye Wan’er wasn’t that kind of person.
Jiang Xiaotian believed that too, but he knew nothing about her. Finding her would be nearly impossible—he could only take things one step at a time.
“Alright, Sister Wan’er’s health has improved. Back home, she’ll only be better cared for. Stop worrying and focus on yourself. After New Year’s, you’ll have to report to the special unit. I heard the other members of the Falcon Team are quite unhappy with you. You’ve been holding out on them for so long, acting all high and mighty!” Qin Lulu tried to reassure him.
But Jiang Xiaotian shot her a glare. “You have the nerve to say that? You haven’t gone either, and who could be lazier than you?”
The girl with the big eyes tilted her head and pouted. “But I’m cute!”
Jiang Xiaotian shuddered and didn’t bother replying.
There was no point staying in the hospital now. After seeing Qin Lulu home, he returned to his own place.
Seeing him back so early, Ling’er was surprised. With her sharp intuition, she immediately sensed something was wrong. “What happened?”
Faced with her concern, Jiang Xiaotian felt as aggrieved as a child. “Ye Wan’er is gone… Her parents took her…”
He told Ling’er everything.
But her response was the complete opposite of Qin Lulu’s.
“You’re still too weak. That’s why, when Ye Wan’er faced problems she couldn’t solve, she left directly. She was probably afraid to drag you into it. Now everyone knows you’re the top agent in Linhai, but she still left without saying goodbye. Don’t think about looking for her anymore. When you’re truly strong, will you still be afraid you can’t find her?”
Jiang Xiaotian said nothing—Ling’er was right.
If he were truly powerful, then whatever problems Ye Wan’er faced, she would surely come to him for help.
Noticing that he was still downcast, Ling’er blinked and cleared her throat.
“I saw an inspiring quote online today, and it suits you perfectly. Listen up: Whatever difficulties we face, we mustn’t be afraid! Face them with a smile! The best way to dispel fear is to confront it head-on! Come on! You can do it!”
Jiang Xiaotian was left speechless.
