Volume One, Chapter 47: You Can No Longer Reach My Heights
“Our colleague Lu Wei has been spreading rumors everywhere that she’s your girlfriend,” Bai Lu said. “If I didn’t know the truth, I’d believe it too!”
Zhou Yang was speechless.
No wonder Su Jing had also heard that he had a girlfriend.
Just now, Zhou Yang finally understood the strange words Zhao Ziying had said earlier.
Zhao Ziying had said, “Why turn away from better options and hang yourself on just one tree?”
She must have heard the rumors and mistakenly thought Lu Wei and Zhou Yang had reconciled.
“This Lu Wei really knows how to cause trouble!” Zhou Yang was furious.
He decided to confront Lu Wei and clear things up; otherwise, who knows what other mischief she might stir up.
It was also damaging to his reputation.
Besides, he had been doing well with women lately and didn’t want her to ruin all his prospects.
“Senior, I’m heading to your department now!”
“Hey, wait... no!” Bai Lu wanted to warn him that Lu Wei’s ex-boyfriend was there, and it wasn’t a good time.
But before she could finish, Zhou Yang had already hung up.
Soon, Zhou Yang arrived downstairs at the administration department and saw Lu Wei in the hallway, talking to a man.
The man had his back to Zhou Yang, his head wrapped in a bandage.
It was Xie Feng, the man who had been injured at the Royal Club earlier.
“Lu Wei, you did this on purpose, didn’t you?” Xie Feng said. “You went back to find Zhou Yang just to spite me, right?”
When Lu Wei saw Zhou Yang approaching, she deliberately said, “You take yourself too seriously. I like Zhou Yang. I was with you just to get a job in the EPS administration department. I never really liked you.”
“Nonsense!” Xie Feng gritted his teeth, almost crazed. “How is Zhou Yang better than me? In what way?”
Lu Wei sneered. “He’s better than you in every way, especially in that department.”
“That department?” Xie Feng was momentarily stunned, then instantly understood.
In an instant, his entire face flushed red like a bomb about to explode.
“In any case, I don’t like you. Zhou Yang is my boyfriend!” Lu Wei deliberately yelled.
In truth, she wasn’t lying to Xie Feng.
She never liked him as a person; she only liked his background and money.
But now, Xie Feng’s background was gone.
His father, Xie Yong, had been demoted to a managerial level after falsely accusing his wife, Tang Yumei.
If Zhou Yang were to be officially hired, they would be peers.
Unable to bear the loss of face, Xie Yong resigned outright.
Xie Feng’s human resources company depended entirely on his father, the former HR director.
Now that the big tree had fallen, his HR company had no business.
His relationship with his mother, Tang Yumei, had also dropped to rock bottom.
So, he had lost both his background and his money.
There was no way Lu Wei would stay by his side.
“Lu Wei, you’ll regret treating me like this!” Xie Feng gritted his teeth and vowed fiercely.
This woman had severely trampled on his dignity, and he swore he wouldn’t let her off.
But Lu Wei ignored him completely, bypassed him, and ran into Zhou Yang’s arms.
“Darling, you’re here!” she said, throwing herself into Zhou Yang’s embrace.
This scene nearly gave Xie Feng a stroke.
Zhou Yang pushed Lu Wei away sharply. “Lu Wei, I warn you—stop spreading rumors, or I’ll take you to court!”
Lu Wei looked aggrieved, clutching Zhou Yang’s arm. “I did it because I like you. You ignored me, so I had no choice but to try this!”
Zhou Yang shook her off. “From now on, keep your distance. Don’t pull any more stunts, or I won’t be so polite! Got it?”
Seeing Zhou Yang truly angry, Lu Wei nodded.
Zhou Yang snorted coldly and was about to leave.
But as he passed by Xie Feng, he suddenly lost interest, stopped, and looked back at him.
“Isn’t she your girlfriend? Then keep an eye on her. Don’t let her come looking for me again. If I ever get upset and take care of her, you’ll be the one left holding the bag.”
“You son of a...” Xie Feng was furious and wanted to hit Zhou Yang.
But remembering Zhou Yang’s terrifying fighting skills, his anger quickly deflated, and he cursed, “You two scoundrels, I won’t let you off. Just you wait!”
With that, he stormed off in anger.
Zhou Yang ignored Lu Wei and headed toward the reception desk at the end of the corridor.
Watching Zhou Yang’s resolute figure, Lu Wei felt deeply saddened.
But she knew this was all her own doing. She felt regret, anger, and helplessness, her mind in a chaotic mess.
Suddenly, a thought flashed through her mind.
“Did Zhou Yang just say that if he ever got upset, he’d ‘take care of me’ and ‘greenlight’ Xie Feng?”
“So that means he’s still interested in me!”
Lu Wei fantasized while pondering how she could make Zhou Yang go through with it.
Meanwhile, Zhou Yang had reached the reception desk and greeted Bai Lu.
“Senior, are you busy?”
“Not too bad right now!” Bai Lu came over, smiling brightly, and lowered her voice. “I just saw Lu Wei’s ex storm off in a rage. What, couldn’t win your argument?”
“I don’t bother with him,” Zhou Yang said. “Senior, I came over specifically to thank you for the heads-up. Otherwise, I’d have been completely in the dark about Lu Wei’s scheming.”
“You’re welcome. You helped me with my illness; I haven’t even thanked you yet!” Bai Lu said.
“But you don’t look well today,” Zhou Yang observed. “Is your insomnia acting up again?”
“No!” Bai Lu replied. “It’s because of a difficult neighbor. There’s a brat upstairs—last night, she threw a party with a bunch of her rowdy friends, making noise all night. I tried talking to her, but she just ignored me.”
“Why not call the police?” Zhou Yang asked.
“Sigh,” Bai Lu said. “She’s pretty, but temperamental, with some shady friends. She threatened me not to call the cops. People like her, I just can’t mess with.”
Her beautiful eyes were filled with helplessness and grievance.
Although Bai Lu’s family was well-off, they were from out of town, not from Shen City.
After graduating from university, her family wanted to send her to South Korea as a trainee.
But she felt her personality wasn’t suited for the entertainment industry, so she resolutely applied to work at EPS.
Now, she was determined to prove to her family that she could carve out a better path on her own.
So, she was struggling alone in Shen City.
Her troublesome neighbor was influential; Bai Lu dared not provoke her.
Society was always full of such pests. The law and police could deter them but never eradicate them.
Ordinary people couldn’t stand up to them and could only bow their heads and endure their bullying.
Because even if you called the police, they’d admit their mistakes and come out worse off—but you’d still be the one suffering.
That was why Bai Lu didn’t dare call the police.
For someone like Bai Lu, who had long suffered from insomnia, dealing with such a neighbor was pure hell.
Zhou Yang couldn’t ignore this.
“Senior, are you free tonight?” Zhou Yang asked.
“Sure!” Bai Lu answered without hesitation. “What’s up? Need my help?”
“I got promoted, right? I want to treat you to dinner tonight.”
“Great! Where are we going? I’ll drive.”
Bai Lu was delighted but still looked exhausted and yawned.
Seeing this, Zhou Yang hurriedly said, “Senior, I’ll drive this time. Let’s go to your place.”
“Huh? You’re treating me to a meal at my place?” Bai Lu’s mind was a bit foggy from a sleepless night.
“Last time, you showed me your skills. This time, I’ll show you my cooking!”
“You can cook?”
“Of course!”
“Alright, I’m looking forward to it!”
“See you tonight!” Zhou Yang said.
