After finishing her wash-up, Li Yan came out, and Zhou Qing left immediately.

Blowing her hair dry, she asked softly, “What are you thinking now?”

Cao Yang sat there stunned, speechless—he honestly didn’t know what to make of it all.

Li Yan’s tone softened further. “I’ll give you two options: either find a job nearby and earn some money before the New Year, or I buy you a train ticket back home.”

“I’m not going back. I came out to make money,” Cao Yang replied firmly.

“That’s the spirit. Then just look around here; there are plenty of job openings.”

She returned to her room and handed him two hundred yuan.

Cao Yang was puzzled. What was she trying to imply? He only had sixty yuan left with her; why give him two hundred? Was this hush money?

“Take it! Why the daze?” she urged.

“What’s the money for? Are you afraid I’ll blab to my family? Is this hush money?” he asked suspiciously.

Li Yan’s expression darkened instantly. She tossed the money onto the sofa and pointed at him. “Hush money for your mother? The work I do is honest and aboveboard. There’s nothing shameful about it!”

“Working at a nightclub counts as honest?” Cao Yang scoffed, curling a cynical smile.

“You country bumpkin! So what if it’s a nightclub? I’m just a waitress, not a prostitute. Don’t let your dirty mind assume the worst of everyone!”

“Ha!” Cao Yang snorted, clearly unconvinced. “If working at a nightclub is respectable, why did you lie to your family and say you were working at a garment factory?”

“You don’t believe me, huh? Fine. Since you want a job, why don’t you come work as a waitress at our nightclub? I’ll show you exactly what I do every day!”

“I won’t go! I refuse to work in a place like that,” Cao Yang said flatly.

Li Yan was about to lose her temper. She was just a waitress, yet he insisted she was something else. No matter what she said, he wouldn’t believe her. She invited him to see for himself, but he refused, clinging stubbornly to his assumptions.

“You have to go. You must!” she grabbed his collar and shook him, growing agitated.

Seeing her reaction, Cao Yang felt a flicker of doubt. Could he have misjudged her?

Normally, being proven wrong would be disappointing, but Cao Yang felt a strange relief deep inside. He didn’t want to believe Li Yan was a prostitute.

“Who were those two men we ate with last time?” Cao Yang asked again. The two men looked shady, not decent folks.

“They’re the boyfriends of me and Zhou Qing. What’s it to you?” Li Yan answered.

Hearing they were her boyfriends, Cao Yang’s brief lift in mood plummeted again, his face darkening.

“What’s wrong? Why such a reaction to me having boyfriends?” Li Yan asked, wide-eyed with surprise.

“Oh, come on! You don’t like me, do you? Jealous because I have boyfriends?” she teased.

“Who likes you? Don’t flatter yourself!” Cao Yang snapped irritably, pulling the blanket over and lying down on the sofa. “I’m going to sleep.”

Li Yan clicked her tongue, secretly pleased that she’d bewitched him. Shaking her head, she returned to her own room.

...

In his sleep, Cao Yang dreamed he was watching a beautiful woman dance for him. Just as she was about to take the next step, a violent pounding on the door jolted him awake.

“Knock, knock, knock...” The noise outside wasn’t just knocking; it sounded like someone was banging the door down.

Cao Yang got up cautiously, alert.

It couldn’t be Li Yan or Zhou Qing—they had keys and wouldn’t be so violent.

“Who is it?” Li Yan came out of her room.

Zhou Qing also peeked out.

The loud noise had woken them both.

“It’s me, baby,” came a voice.

Li Yan relaxed—her boyfriend, A Le.

She opened the door, and seven men flooded in, each with tattooed arms, unmistakably tough gangsters.

“What are you doing here?” Li Yan took a step back, startled.

“Baby, give me the money,” A Le said, his voice trembling with a hint of sobbing.

Li Yan noticed his bruised, battered face.

Another man looked similarly beaten—the boyfriend of Zhou Qing. Cao Yang recognized both of them.

The two men knelt on the floor, looking miserable, begging Li Yan for money.

Behind them stood five men with harsh faces; among them was a buzz-cut man who was the leader. His eyes gleamed with a lecherous light as he stared at Li Yan.

“Girl, your boyfriend owes us ten thousand yuan. You gonna pay up for him?”

Li Yan clutched her purse tightly and took a cautious step back. “I have no money. I’m not helping him.”

The buzz-cut man laughed. “If you won’t pay, we’ll just have to kill him.”

“Whatever,” Li Yan retreated again until she stood beside Cao Yang.

The man turned to Zhou Qing with the same question; Zhou Qing gave the same answer.

“You bitch! I spent so much money on you, and now I ask you for money to save me, and you act like you don’t know me!” Li Yan’s boyfriend yelled.

The buzz-cut man kicked him. “Fuck off! You made us waste our time!”

“Boss, she has money—she’s just stingy,” another thug said.

“Well, if she won’t pay, we can’t force her. We’re reasonable, not gangsters.”

“Boss, she owes me money too. If she gives me the cash, I can pay you back!”

“Sounds reasonable,” the leader said, glancing at Li Yan. “Girl, paying debts is only right. You owe, so pay up.”

“I don’t owe him anything!” Li Yan snapped.

“You’re full of shit! The clothes you wear, your bag, the gold necklace—didn’t I buy those? Even the place you live? I rent it for you!”

Li Yan was silent, saying nothing.

“In that case, we need to have a serious talk.”

The buzz-cut man smirked and stepped toward Li Yan. His four henchmen blocked the door and locked it behind them.

Li Yan grew fearful and kept backing away.

The man stopped in front of Cao Yang and looked at him. “Kid, move over.”

Cao Yang obediently shifted to the left.

The man lit a cigarette, eyeing Li Yan. “He owes us money, you owe him money, so just pay us directly.”

Li Yan shook her head again. “I have no money. I don’t owe him anything either.”

“Leave now, or I call the cops,”I'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
