Chapter Five: Suddenly Crashing into an Embrace
The next morning, just as the sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting mottled patterns across the room, the shrill ring of a phone shattered the silence.
Xǔ Miǎo groggily reached for the phone. Seeing "Father" on the screen instantly snapped her awake, banishing all traces of sleep.
She took a deep breath and pressed the answer button.
“Hello.”
“Dinner at seven tonight, Dongtian Elegant Residence. Meet with Master Fàn. Don’t be late.” On the other end came Xǔ Zhòng’s cold, commanding voice, devoid of any emotion.
Xǔ Miǎo remained silent, her knuckles tightening around the phone until they turned white.
“Did you hear me? Dress nicely—don’t come looking as sloppy as usual and embarrass me!”
Not waiting for her response, Xǔ Zhòng’s tone grew more impatient. “And don’t think you can pull any tricks. You know exactly how your mother is now. I managed to find you a husband from the Fàn family—that’s a blessing earned over generations. You should be grateful!”
“If Master Fàn hadn’t taken a liking to you, your mother would still be lying in that hospital waiting to die!”
That last sentence struck Xǔ Miǎo like a dagger to the heart.
She closed her eyes, grinding her teeth for a long moment before forcing out a single word through clenched teeth:
“Mm.”
“That’s all I need to hear! You’re using your brother’s resources, living off the Xǔ family’s money, studying all these years—that’s your duty...”
Xǔ Miǎo no longer wished to listen. She cut him off, hung up decisively, not wanting to waste even a word more.
Her hand dropped weakly, and the phone slipped onto the bedspread.
Xǔ Miǎo’s biological father had died early.
When she was three, her mother remarried, bringing her to marry Xǔ Zhòng, a man then somewhat successful in business.
Xǔ Zhòng was also on his second marriage and had a son, Xǔ Tínghēng, who was a year younger than Xǔ Miǎo.
Since her mother was diagnosed with brain cancer and the Xǔ family business plummeted, Xǔ Zhòng and his son had been squeezing her mercilessly day and night.
Throughout high school and university, Xǔ Zhòng barely supported her living expenses and even resented her for using the Xǔ family’s money, blaming her college admission for depriving her brother of more resources and causing him to fail to enter university.
He cut off her allowance, claiming it was to cover the fees for her brother’s private university.
Fortunately, she excelled at her studies and managed to rely mostly on scholarships to cover her living expenses. Thanks to her outstanding grades, she was admitted to the Film Academy of Nancheng University, the nation’s top directing department. Now a junior, she had already won several awards.
Yet now, Xǔ Zhòng wanted to use her to arrange a marriage with Master Fàn to help pay off company debts.
Unfortunately, she knew nothing about business; all her mother’s assets were tightly controlled by Xǔ Zhòng. She vowed to grow stronger quickly and find a way to take back what was rightfully hers.
***
That evening at Dongtian Elegant Residence—one of the city’s most exclusive private clubs—Xǔ Zhòng had splurged on a premium private room to meet Master Fàn formally with Xǔ Miǎo.
Xǔ Miǎo wore a white slip dress, sitting uneasily in her seat, feeling like a commodity up for sale.
The dress had been chosen by Xǔ Zhòng. It was low-cut, accentuating her fair skin and exquisitely curvaceous figure, highlighting her alluring silhouette.
As she walked toward the private room after changing, she felt many eyes turning to look at her.
Beside her sat her stepfather, Xǔ Zhòng, and her half-brother, Xǔ Tínghēng.
At the head of the table was Xǔ Miǎo’s fiancé, Master Fàn.
Master Fàn was roughly in his forties, sporting a slick, shiny Mediterranean hairstyle. His corpulent frame sank into the chair, his belly stretching the designer shirt taut.
His small eyes gleamed with shrewdness and lust, fixating on Xǔ Miǎo from the moment she entered, unabashedly appraising her from head to toe, making her utterly uncomfortable.
“Oh, Master Fàn, our Miǎo is a bit shy and not very talkative,” Xǔ Zhòng said with a sycophantic smile, personally pouring Maotai liquor for him. “Come on, Miǎo, raise a glass to Master Fàn! From now on, you belong to the Fàn family. You need to learn some manners from him.”
Xǔ Tínghēng chimed in beside them, “Yes, sister, Master Fàn is a big name in Nancheng. Marrying him is your great fortune!” He then shot a sharp glance at Xǔ Miǎo.
Xǔ Miǎo bit her lip, glared back but swallowed her anger.
Opposing Xǔ Tínghēng never ended well.
Xǔ Tínghēng and his privileged friends had once bullied Xǔ Miǎo at school. When she resisted and proved stronger, they kidnapped one of her close friends to a karaoke bar, took intimate photos, and used those to blackmail Xǔ Miǎo into kneeling and apologizing.
She was powerless, afraid not only for herself but for her friend, so she obeyed.
Since then, no one dared befriend her, and she refrained from making friends at school.
Master Fàn smiled with satisfaction, squinting his eyes as he lifted his glass. His hefty fingers slid deliberately over the back of Xǔ Miǎo’s hand as she held her cup.
The greasy touch churned her stomach. She fought back her nausea and downed the fiery liquor in one gulp, the burning liquid scorching her throat.
“Good! Straightforward!” Master Fàn clapped his hands and praised her, his eyes growing even more lascivious. “You seem quiet, but your drinking’s impressive. Come on, another round!”
Seeing this, Xǔ Zhòng quickly refilled her glass and whispered near her ear, “Take good care of Master Fàn, keep him happy, and your mother’s treatment expenses won’t be a worry.”
The entire meal felt tasteless and hollow to Xǔ Miǎo.
Like a puppet, she followed Xǔ Zhòng’s cues, raising glass after glass to Master Fàn.
His words grew increasingly lewd, even telling dirty jokes that made Xǔ Zhòng and Xǔ Jiāyīn laugh loudly. To Xǔ Miǎo, their laughter sounded grating and repulsive.
After several rounds of drinkingI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
