By the time dinner finished and I went online, it was already six o’clock. At the courier station, Xiao Yue arrived fashionably late. Not long after, Liang Wei, who insisted on accompanying me to the auction, hurried over right after class.

Having not trained with them these past few days, Xiao Yue had already reached level 27, while Ah Wei was at level 26. Seeing that everyone had gathered, Xiao Yue excitedly said, “Brother Bat, let’s set off quickly. We can’t be late—missing the opening ceremony of the Imperial City’s very first auction would be a shame.” Cheerful and vivacious like a girl next door, Xiao Yue’s presence kept the atmosphere light and filled with laughter. Slowly, their influence was softening my naturally gloomy disposition.

I pulled out an unknown pill, feigning mystery: “Xiao Yue, dare to take this pill? Be careful; it might be a knockout drug.”

Xiao Yue grinned happily, “Hehe, Brother Bat, you can’t fool me. This must be your newly concocted intermediate-grade pill. Even if it’s not, if it’s from you, Xiao Yue would take it without hesitation!”

“Boss, you can’t play favorites and neglect your friends. What about my share?” Ah Wei complained beside us.

“Enough, you’re no beauty. Why would you need a beauty pill?” Teasing this little brother who lacked any sense of camaraderie was one of my daily pleasures.

“Come on, Boss, since when did you become an expert in beauty care?” Ah Wei looked incredulous.

“Ah Wei, Brother Bat is just joking. This is a magic-type intermediate pill; it won’t do you any good,” Xiao Yue said, her face lighting up as she noticed the stat boosts. Sweetly, she added, “Thank you, Brother Bat!”

“Knowing that beauties have it better, next life I want to be a beauty too…” Ah Wei muttered quietly.

“It’s not too late. If you have time, visit Thailand. Their top-notch gender reassignment surgeries are world-famous,” Xiao Yue said with big blinking eyes, mercilessly pushing him into the pit.

“Technically sound, yes, but the feasibility is still questionable. Are you sure Ah Wei will become a beauty after the surgery?” I asked.

“Wah… Boss, are you going to rub salt into my wounded heart? How am I supposed to survive?” Ah Wei whimpered pitifully.

“I’m just worried you’ll get carried away and miss the auction’s opening ceremony. Alright, alright. Stop sulking like a scorned woman. Next time I brew a pill suited for you, you’ll be the first to try it!”

“Yeah! I knew the party and our leaders would never abandon loyal supporters like us. The warm spring breeze of the Boss will surely blow through every corner of my heart. You are the dazzling sun in my sky, giving me light and strength. You are my Mother Earth, nurturing me with sweet milk…” He suddenly switched from his earlier pitiful state to spouting nonsense with grand flourish.

I gave him a hard slap, “Shut up! Who’s your Mother Earth? Crap…”

Xiao Yue was already doubled over with laughter, managing to catch her breath to say, “Brother Bat, so you actually have sweet milk?”

What on earth was going on…

Amid the laughter, we arrived at the Imperial City, Lin’an. Though it wasn’t my first time here, I was always struck by its grandeur and imposing majesty—this city of emperors radiated an aura of dominance. The twelve-zhang-high city walls and the wide surrounding moat formed an impenetrable barrier. Any siege weapon set before them was rendered useless. Rows of level-200 Imperial City guards stood alert, their armor sharp and spirits high. A glance from their fierce eyes made one feel as powerless as a rabbit under a hawk’s watch. At 7:10, the auction venue was already packed with people. Players of all professions showed off their most prized gear, and a dazzling array of beauties vied for attention, too many to take in at once. Xiao Yue and I stood leisurely at the side, watching the passing players. With a little brother around, I didn’t have to bother buying tickets myself. The gazes cast our way ranged from admiration and envy to astonishment and jealousy. Unable to bear so much attention, Xiao Yue’s cheeks flushed as she grabbed my hand and nestled close.

Within two minutes, Ah Wei had returned with three scroll-like tickets. Opening them, the system confirmed our entry rights. The auction hall was structured like a real-world football stadium, except the field was a small stage. The venue was festooned with decorations. Above the stage, a giant screen played the promotional animation for “Fantasy.” The theme song echoed melodiously:

No rise, no fall, no joys or sorrows of Buddha, black knuckles, red eye sockets
No water, no fire, no smoke of war, cold iron armor black, skirt hem red
Who prays, who chants, who rolls up their sleeves, Azure Sword to the left, sorrow to the right

Who draws the bow, who waves the sleeves, who unfurls the scroll, God-Extinguishing Axe forward, youth backward
Who waits, who waits for ten thousand years, only to meet a mistake
Who gazes at whom for a single second, thus leaving behind a legend
He waited for her ten thousand years, only to be left with loneliness
She glanced at him for a second, then turned away, taking the legend with her
One person weeping draws the roar of ten thousand
A thousand armors cannot resist three inches of tender softness
