Chapter 28: He Is Dangerous

Zhang Jun had not held out much hope. His bicycle was gone—could it really be found?
Perhaps the officer had only been saying it to reassure him.
The two men exchanged contact information.
Only then did Zhang Jun learn that the officer was named Meng Weidong.
When he returned home, Liu Yujie went into the kitchen to prepare dinner.
“Why don’t we buy a car?” she suggested.
“I don’t have the money,” Zhang Jun replied bluntly. “Even a van costs tens of thousands. A proper passenger car would cost even more.”
“We could buy one on installment. Spread the payments over three years and pay a down payment first?”
Liu Yujie’s ambitions were growing bolder by the day. First she had wanted to buy an apartment in an elevator building; now she wanted a car as well.
They had no children yet. With the salaries they earned, the two of them could live comfortably in the provincial capital and still save a little. But once they had a child, their expenses would skyrocket. Where would they find the spare money for a house and a car then?
Zhang Jun did not want to live under a mountain of debt, still less become a slave to a mortgage or a car loan.
The disagreement led to another quarrel.
During dinner, Liu Yujie placed some spare ribs in his bowl and said, “I want to tell you something. Promise me first that you won’t get angry. If you can do it, then do it. If you can’t, forget it.”
Zhang Jun kept his head lowered as he ate. “What is it?”
After a brief hesitation, Liu Yujie said, “Zhou Wenbin wants to meet Governor Ma. He’s asking you to arrange it.”
Zhang Jun abruptly looked up at her. His eyes seemed to flash with fire.
He gave a cold laugh. “You’re still in contact with him?”
Liu Yujie set down her bowl and chopsticks and took his hand. “Listen to me. There’s really nothing between us. He treats everyone this way. He’s flirted with every female nurse in our department, and not one of them paid him any attention. He came to me and said he wanted to meet Governor Ma. If you’re willing to arrange it, he’ll give us fifty thousand as a token of appreciation.”
“Fifty thousand? Last time he gave me a hundred thousand, and I was thrown out after being cursed at!” Zhang Jun snorted. “I’m telling you, don’t get involved with that man in any way. He’s dangerous!”
Liu Yujie still could not understand. “He’s only a deputy hospital director. What’s so dangerous about him? Oh, you’re still worried that he’ll bully me, aren’t you? If I refuse, he wouldn’t dare rape me, would he? If I reported him, he’d go to prison. He wouldn’t dare.”
His wife was certainly a formidable woman, adept at maintaining good relations with everyone at work.
Back when he had pursued her, he had spent a great deal of time and effort before finally winning her over.
During the lunch break, Liu Yujie had been overcome with desire and taken the initiative so aggressively that Zhang Jun had been caught off guard, with no choice but to let her have her way.
Just before the afternoon shift began, Zhang Jun received a call.
“Secretary Zhang, this is Meng Weidong. Your wife’s bicycle has been found.”
“Found?” The news astonished Zhang Jun even more than hearing that it had not been found.
Bicycle theft was exceedingly common in the city. Over the past few years, he and his wife had lost three bicycles.
A Phoenix-brand bicycle cost five hundred yuan. Three of them came to fifteen hundred yuan—a loss painful enough to think about.
He had reported the thefts before, but each case had eventually vanished without a trace and been abandoned.
After getting used to it, he had stopped bothering to report such things. Once a bicycle was gone, it was gone. There was no chance of recovering it anyway.
This time, however, he had barely informed Meng Weidong before the bicycle was found in less than two hours. It was practically miraculous.
“A blue-and-white women’s Phoenix bicycle with a basket attached to the front, correct?” Meng Weidong described it.
“Yes, that’s the one.” Zhang Jun had already discussed it with him.
Meng Weidong said, “Secretary Zhang, I’ve already sent someone to deliver the bicycle to your building. Just have your wife come downstairs and sign for it.”
Zhang Jun sent Liu Yujie downstairs to collect it.
Not long afterward, Liu Yujie came back upstairs with a smile.
“This Meng Weidong is really impressive! He actually managed to recover a stolen bicycle! It’s even newer than mine!”
Zhang Jun stared at her in confusion. “What? It’s newer than yours? Then it isn’t yours. Why did you sign for it?”
Liu Yujie was getting ready for work. “Why bother with so many details? It’s stolen property confiscated by the police, after all. It looks exactly like mine, only the paint seems newer. The thief probably repainted it to sell it at a higher price. That’s what the officer said, not me.”
Speechless, Zhang Jun shook his head.
Ever since he had become Governor Ma Hongqi’s secretary, everything seemed to go extraordinarily smoothly for him. Truly, when fortune arrives, even Heaven and Earth lend their strength; when luck departs, even heroes are left powerless.
Zhang Jun rode his bicycle to work.
He went to the office first, brewed the tea, and put everything in order. Then he took a car with one of the drivers from the transport pool to the guesthouse.
Ma Hongqi happened to be leaving.
Once they were in the car, Ma Hongqi said, “The Provincial People’s Hospital.”
The driver asked foolishly, “Governor Ma, do you mean the First Hospital?”
Zhang Jun quickly interjected, “Driver, since the governor didn’t specifically say the Second or Third Hospital, it can only mean the First.”
The driver gave an embarrassed acknowledgment. “I was only worried about making a mistake. I didn’t mean anything else. Some leaders give very detailed instructions, while others just say a word or two. Sometimes it’s easy to get confused.”
Zhang Jun thought he was talking too much and gave a light cough.
The driver fell silent.
When they arrived at the Provincial People’s Hospital, Ma Hongqi entered the outpatient hall and joined the line at the registration desk.
Zhang Jun was momentarily bewildered. Unsure what his superior intended, he stepped forward and asked, “Governor, shall I stand in line for you?”

Ma Hongqi waved him off. “Go upstairs and look around. We’ve come today to experience for ourselves how difficult it is to see a doctor. Whatever impressions you have, you must report them to me honestly.”
Zhang Jun wondered whether such an experience was really necessary. Who was unaware of the difficulty of getting an appointment or receiving medical treatment?
No matter how serious the illness, once patients entered the hospital they first had to spend an entire day undergoing examinations. They endured one queue after another, one ordeal after another. They were already sick, and by the end they had practically lost half their lives.
Sometimes a person went to the doctor with stomach pain, only to be told immediately to undergo a gastroscopy. Yet the waiting list for a gastroscopy was a week long.
Without the gastroscopy, the doctor would neither treat the patient nor prescribe any medicine.
Who with a stomachache could endure a week? Either the pain killed you, or it went away on its own.
Since Ma Hongqi had given his instructions, Zhang Jun had no choice but to go upstairs.
He went to the floor where his wife worked.
The Provincial People’s Hospital was enormous, with numerous wards and dozens of head nurses.
Thus, although Liu Yujie called herself a head nurse, she was actually nothing special within the institution. That was precisely why she was so eager to climb higher.
“Oh, Secretary Zhang, you’re such a busy man. What brings you to our little corner today?” The nurse on duty giggled when she saw him.
Zhang Jun smiled faintly and went to his wife’s office. He pushed open the door—and saw Liu Yujie talking with Zhou Wenbin.
Zhou Wenbin acted like a frightened dog whenever he was in Zhang Jun’s presence, but his true nature had not changed. He had always coveted Liu Yujie’s delicate, beautiful body.
His eyes gleamed with lust as he reached out, trying to touch her hand.
Liu Yujie dodged him and said, “Director Zhou, don’t do that. If you have something to say, just say it.”
Zhang Jun’s face turned cold. Forgetting that they were in a hospital, he gave a low, angry snort.
Liu Yujie turned her head and cried out in delighted surprise, “Zhang Jun!”
Now that Zhang Jun had been promoted, Liu Yujie could not have been happier whenever he came to visit her workplace. His presence elevated her standing in everyone’s eyes.
Zhou Wenbin’s expression changed at once. He plastered on a smile and exclaimed, “Secretary Zhang! Welcome, welcome!”
Zhang Jun entered the room, closed the door, and drove his fist straight into Zhou Wenbin’s eye.
