Chapter 34: No Car, No House, But You Have a Dream
Page 1 of 3
Once he had settled on a modification plan, Wei Xiu got down to work with a grunt and a heave.
At first, he had thought that nobody in their right mind would do repair work.
Driving for a ride-hailing service or delivering food would be better than this.
But since he had a system, it would be a waste not to use it.
Now, though—
Even a dog would refuse to do repairs, but he was more than happy to do them!
This job was genuinely delightful.
Every day, he dealt with screws and motor oil.
There was no need to provide emotional support.
The workload was hardly strenuous.
Best of all, people would actually confer titles on him, like professor or model supporter of the military, and give him plenty of emotional validation in return.
What a life.
A truly satisfying life.
Just as Wei Xiu was happily working on the cars, Qin Xi sent him a message.
“Professor Wei, when shall we begin our work?”
It was obvious that Qin Xi had already grown impatient.
A full week had passed since her superiors had assigned them the task, yet there had been no movement at all on his side.
Forget conducting research or writing a paper—
Wei Xiu had not even mentioned it.
So when Qin Xi sent the message, it carried a distinct note of irritation.
“If we do not begin soon, I am afraid it will be difficult for us to give our superiors an explanation.”
“If you find it difficult, I can begin working on it myself.”
“But rest assured. If we achieve any results, we will still put your name on them.”
???
The girl was quite pretty, but she certainly knew how to speak unpleasantly.
Did she really think that a grown man like him would freeload off her results?
With that thought, Wei Xiu quickly replied:
“I’ve nearly finished with everything on my hands. If it’s convenient for you, you can come over here.”
At last, she had received a definite answer.
Qin Xi replied impatiently:
“All right. I’ll be there this afternoon!”
“She’s certainly in a hurry.”
Wei Xiu had not expected her to come the moment she said she would.
He had also arranged to hand over a car to Old Master Yang that very day.
The appointments had collided perfectly.
But then again, that was simply how life worked.
When you had free time, you were always lonely.
When things got busy, they came crashing down on your heels, leaving you not a moment to catch your breath.
Wei Xiu waited at the shop all morning.
Neither Old Master Yang nor Qin Xi showed up.
Around noon, however, he saw his elder sister’s Corolla pull up outside the family home.
“Mom? Sis? What are you doing here?” Wei Xiu asked, his face full of question marks.
“Can’t I come and take a look at my own home?”
His mother, Yang Huiru, was carrying a large bag of fruit.
His elder sister, Wei Xuan, held a shopping bag marked HLA.
About fifteen minutes later, his second aunt and two maternal aunts also arrived at the shop.
Looking at the lineup, Wei Xiu realized that something was definitely going on.
“Sis, what’s all this about?”

Wei Xuan assumed the imposing air of an elder sister who was practically a mother.
“Do you know your second aunt’s cousin?”
“...What?”
Wei Xiu was completely baffled.
His father’s father was his grandfather.
His mother’s mother was his grandmother.
But what did you call his second aunt’s cousin? He honestly had no idea.
“The matchmaker, Aunt Liu.”
“Before the New Year, Mom and I were thinking of finding you a girl.”
“Aunt Liu said she knew someone suitable, but she worked out of town and could only come back during the summer.”
“You’re in luck. She’s back today.”
“She’ll be coming to our house today.”
Wei Xiu’s expression immediately darkened.
What was this supposed to mean? Didn’t she have a home of her own?
After finally returning to her hometown, why was she so eager to run over to some strange man’s house?
Honestly, unbelievable.
To be fair, the men on his father’s side might have been unpleasant to listen to, but at least they only talked.
The women on his mother’s and sister’s side were not only sharp-tongued—
They were also terrifyingly efficient.
They had arranged a blind date behind his back and even brought along the outfit he was supposed to wear.
Wei Xuan lifted the shopping bag.
“Hurry up. Go take a shower and change your clothes.”
“I have clothes of my own.”
Wei Xuan glanced at his grease-stained jeans.
“You have nothing of the sort. I bought this at HLA—the home of men’s wardrobes.”
Wei Xiu opened the bag. Inside was a black suit.
It looked exactly like the uniform of a real-estate agent.
“This is clearly the wardrobe of people determined to make me miserable.”
“Why are you talking so much? Go shower and make a good impression.”
Wei Xiu did not move an inch.
Taking a shower was the highest courtesy one could show another person.
Even if Fairy Liu herself came to his door, he would only be willing to wash his hair.
And now they expected him to do more for a blind date?
What was she, a superhero? Had she saved the world?
“Come on, Sis. I have a lot to do today. I’m meeting several groups of people.”
“Even the Emperor of Heaven would have to wait in line today! You have no idea how outstanding this girl is.”
Yang Huiru stood with her arms folded, her face filled with longing for a daughter-in-law.
Objectively speaking, Wei Xiu was a decent catch.
But that did not account for Mrs. Yang’s fondness for daydreaming.
She had asked matchmakers before, and there had been plenty of choices, but the girls’ jobs had generally been nothing special.
Today’s girl was different.
She was a teacher from out of town with a permanent government position—a genuine iron rice bowl—and she was from a town in their home region.
She was suitable. Almost absurdly suitable.
So, faced with Wei Xiu’s stubborn refusal to cooperate, his mother resorted to family discipline and drove him toward the bathroom with a broom.
...
By the time Wei Xiu came out after drying his hair, there were already two more people in the shop.
One was a middle-aged woman who was presumably the matchmaker.
The other wore a floral dress and had long, jet-black hair.
From head to toe, she radiated the aura of a perfect wife.
There was no need to ask.

This was the model daughter-in-law his mother had been dreaming of—the woman he had been set up with.
The moment Wei Xiu stepped out, the noisy room fell silent.
The matchmaker proved herself a woman of great tact and emotional intelligence.
“Well then, you young people have a good talk. We’ll go outside and get some sun.”
The group filed out through the door.
The woman slowly raised her head, but the instant her eyes met Wei Xiu’s, she quickly looked away.
There was only one reason.
Wei Xiu was more handsome than she had expected.
He stood six feet tall, had a sturdy build, and possessed handsome, regular features.
A man with looks like that was a hot commodity on the blind-date market.
“Hello. My name is Xu Miao.”
“My name is Wei Xiu.”
Wei Xiu rubbed his hair with a towel, his mind clearly elsewhere.
“I teach at Rongcheng No. 2 Middle School. I have a graduate degree. What about you?”
“Junior college.”
At those words, Xu Miao’s expression darkened.
Sure enough, you could not have both the fish and the bear’s paw.
If a man was handsome, he was bound to be lacking in education.
Still, it was not entirely unacceptable. Perhaps he had a good job.
“What do you do for a living?”
Wei Xiu gestured toward the shop.
“Can’t you tell? I’m a repairman.”
“But the matchmaker told me you also have some sort of permanent position at a school.”
“Oh, that?” Wei Xiu could not be bothered to explain. “I’m only registered under a school in the Northeast.”
The matchmaker certainly had wide-reaching sources of information.
He had only just been appointed a professor, and she already knew about it.
Under normal circumstances, this would have been the moment to show off and announce that he was a specially appointed professor at the Harbin Institute of Technology.
But Wei Xiu knew where to show off and where not to.
The fact that Xu Miao was still willing to continue the conversation after learning that he had only attended junior college meant that she was quite interested.
If he gave her too much to admire, she might get a taste for it.
Things had unfolded exactly as Wei Xiu expected.
From the standpoint of education and employment, his circumstances had already crossed Xu Miao’s bottom line.
Fortunately, Xu Miao’s bottom line was flexible.
A handsome man could be forgiven for having less education; even lacking a permanent government position could be overlooked.
Although he modestly called himself a repairman, he was actually self-employed.
As for his income, appearances could be deceiving.
With that thought, Xu Miao began by offering a little information of her own.
“I earn seven thousand a month.”
“I don’t have a car or a house.”
“But I do have a permanent government position.”
“So I hope my future husband’s income will be relatively high.”
“Of course, he must have both a car and a house. That’s the only way I can feel secure.”
Wei Xiu listened, then pursed his lips.
She was not much to look at, yet she certainly had beautiful dreams.
There was nothing wrong with having aspirations. In dreams, you could have anything.
