The girl gave a shy smile. “It isn’t too heavy. Thank you, really. I’m in a hurry, so I’ll be going now.”

With that, she headed toward the door. She walked very slowly, however, and seemed to be struggling. Clearly, her claim that the things were not heavy had been a lie.

A shrill, piercing voice suddenly came from the doorway.

“Jiang Mengshu, are you a snail? Why are you walking so slowly? If you delay Chun-chun’s performance, can you afford the consequences? Move your ass!”

Lin Chen looked over. The speaker was a “man” with an androgynous appearance, fair skin, and delicate, feminine features. He was pointing at the girl with an affected, dainty gesture, his face full of arrogance and impatience. To be honest, if he had covered his Adam’s apple, Lin Chen might not have been able to tell whether he was male or female.

“This guy actually calls himself ‘your old lady.’ What a freak,” Lin Chen muttered.

When Jiang Mengshu saw him, she looked flustered and hurriedly said, “Manager Luo, I’ll catch up right away. Right away.”

She quickened her pace, but the things were simply too heavy. In her haste, she tripped and fell directly onto the floor.

Seeing this, Manager Luo strode over viciously and pointed a finger at Jiang Mengshu, nearly pressing it against her nose. His voice became even shriller as his anger grew.

“What use are you as a personal assistant? You’re completely useless! You can’t even handle such a trivial matter. If you really can’t do the job, then get lost! There are plenty of people lining up to become Chun-chun’s assistant!”

Jiang Mengshu’s face was twisted with pain. She rubbed her sprained ankle and said aggrievedly after hearing Manager Luo’s words, “Manager Luo, but… but you didn’t tell me last night that these things needed to be prepared. You only notified me an hour ago, so I had just finished finding and packing everything. That’s why I was delayed for a little while.”

Seeing the people around him pointing and whispering, Manager Luo grew furious. “What are you, anyway? You’re nothing but a lowly personal assistant, and you dare talk back to me, a top agent? Do you believe I can fire you right now?”

Tears glimmered in the girl’s eyes, but in the end she gritted her teeth and stood up, enduring the pain in her foot.

She stared stubbornly at Manager Luo.

“What are you looking at me for? Do you want to bite me? If you can’t even endure this little hardship, then you shouldn’t have come to Yuehai City. Go back to your countryside, you bumpkin! Did you really think you were so precious? Hurry up. Chun-chun is still waiting outside!” Manager Luo barked coldly.

Jiang Mengshu clenched her teeth. At last, she laboriously gathered everything up and followed Manager Luo.

Because of her sprained ankle, she limped as she walked, her brows drawn together in pain.

“Hurry up! Stop dragging your feet!” Manager Luo turned around and shouted in his shrill voice.

Lin Chen finally could not stand it any longer. He walked over and said irritably, “You’re a man, yet you’re letting a young girl carry such a huge pile of things. Don’t you feel ashamed?”

Manager Luo was startled when Lin Chen stepped forward. Then he looked Lin Chen up and down. After taking in his clothes, his eyes filled with disdain.

“What poor wretch wandered in here wearing those ragged clothes? Security is getting more and more useless. Do you know where you are? This is Skyvault Entertainment. Celebrities are everywhere, and it’s the fashion center of all Cathay. Now look at how you’re dressed—you’re practically a beggar. What right do you have to stand here?

“Forget it. I can’t be bothered with a nobody like you. You’ll lower my status. Get out of here immediately! My affairs are none of your concern. There are hardly any people at Skyvault Entertainment who dare interfere with me. Get lost!”

Lin Chen sneered. “No matter how tasteless my clothes are, they’re still better than yours. You’re a grown man dressed like a woman, and you’re bullying a young girl on top of that. What status do you think you have?”

Quite a few of the onlookers nearby burst out laughing.

Everyone knew that Manager Luo preferred men and disliked women. However, he was one of the company’s top agents, and normally no one dared speak to him like that.

Many of the onlookers felt vindicated, but at the same time they silently mourned for Lin Chen. This young man was in serious trouble now.

“You… you little bastard! How dare you speak to me like that? If you have the nerve, say it again!” Manager Luo exclaimed in disbelief, beside himself with rage.

Lin Chen curled his lip. “I’ve never met anyone this shameless. Being insulted isn’t enough for you—you actually have to beg for more. You must be a masochist.”

“Wah, wah, wah! You’re driving me crazy, you little bastard, you little—ah!”

Before he could finish, Lin Chen slapped him across the face. One of his teeth was knocked straight out and landed on the floor.

The force of that slap was evident.

Lin Chen’s voice was cold as ice. “If you dare curse at me again, I’ll knock every one of your teeth out.”

Lin Chen had already felt disgusted watching the man bully the girl. Since the man had now dared to insult him as well, Lin Chen naturally had no intention of showing mercy.

The people around them were stunned by how domineering Lin Chen was. Without even exchanging more than a few words, he had knocked a tooth out of Manager Luo’s mouth.

Who was this young man? He was far too fierce. Why had no one ever seen him at the company before?

“You…”

Manager Luo covered his face, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. He glared venomously at Lin Chen and was about to curse him out, but when he met Lin Chen’s gaze, cold as an icy blade, he swallowed the words.

“What happened? Brother Luo, why have you been inside so long? Has that Jiang Mengshu still not come out?”

A handsome young man with the appearance of a Korean-style idol approached. He shouted from a distance when he saw Manager Luo, but as he drew closer and noticed the handprint on Manager Luo’s face, his expression changed dramatically.

“You were hit? Who hit you?”

The onlookers nearby immediately wiped the smiles from their faces when they saw the young man, as though they were afraid he might notice them.

“That young man is finished. He actually dared hit one of Lu Chun’s people. It was satisfying, but he was too reckless.”

“Exactly. Lu Chun won Yuehai City’s Best Newcomer Award in Film and Television a while ago. The company is sparing no effort to promote him, so he’s incredibly influential right now. Who would dare provoke him?”

“Still, I’ve never liked him. An Xueyao isn’t just a superstar—she’s also the chairman’s daughter—yet even she isn’t as arrogant as he is.”

“People become insufferable when they suddenly gain power. But he’s handsome and can act. What can anyone do? Keep your voice down. Whatever you do, don’t let him hear you criticizing him. He’s extremely petty!”

The people around them whispered among themselves, and their gazes toward Lin Chen gradually filled with sympathy.

Regardless of anything else, given Lu Chun’s personality, anyone who dared slap one of his people would at the very least be slapped twice in return.

When Manager Luo saw Lu Chun, he looked as though he had found his savior. Pointing at Lin Chen, he said, “Chun-chun, that’s the man who hit me. You have to avenge me!”

Upon hearing this, Lu Chun examined Lin Chen coldly. But when he saw that Lin Chen’s expression had not changed in the slightest, as though he did not take Lu Chun seriously at all, a trace of doubt arose in his heart.

He had managed to reach his current position and earn the appreciation of the company’s leaders, so he was naturally no fool.

Anyone who dared hit his agent inside the company was either ignorant or genuinely powerful enough not to care about him.

He looked at Lin Chen suspiciously. “Who are you? I don’t think I’ve seen you before.”

Lin Chen replied, “There’s nothing strange about you not having seen me. I’m not an employee here to begin with.”

A hint of amusement appeared on Lu Chun’s face. “Judging by the way you’re dressed, don’t tell me you came here looking for a job. So you really don’t know who you hit?”

“You’re right. You could say I did come here looking for work. As for who he is, what does that have to do with me? Whoever he was, I would have slapped him anyway.”

Lin Chen really had come looking for work. In fact, he was there to apply for the position of An Xueyao’s bodyguard.

The trace of caution on Lu Chun’s face disappeared. He had initially worried that Lin Chen might be some hidden powerhouse pretending to be weak, but it turned out he was merely a reckless fool looking for a job.

The man had practically provoked a tiger in its own territory. He clearly had a death wish.

Lu Chun sneered arrogantly. “So you dared hit him without even knowing who he was? Then let me tell you: he’s my man. You hit one of my people, and you still expect to find a job here? Keep dreaming!”
