Chapter 110: The Moment I Fell in Love, the Whole World Became My Rival in Love (10)
Luo Xiaoyang said, “In any case, it is better to believe something may be true than to believe it is not. Remember to fill a thermos with hot water in advance, and unless you are working the night shift, do not go out after ten at night.”
Bai Yao nodded. “All right, I understand.”
Luo Xiaoyang had work of her own. After bringing Bai Yao to Doctor Ma’s office, she left.
Bai Yao observed the rumored cursed Doctor Ma.
He was a middle-aged man wearing glasses, looking refined and scholarly, with thin arms and legs. He did not seem like the sort of man who would fly into such a rage that he would even hit his assistants.
He seemed not to have rested well for a very long time. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, his complexion was sallow, and he kept drawing something on the paper with a pen, only to become dissatisfied, suddenly tear the sheet off, crumple it into a ball, and throw it away.
Only then did he remember Bai Yao. Lifting his eyes, he asked, “New here?”
Bai Yao smiled. “Yes. Hello, Doctor Ma. I’m Bai Yao.”
Doctor Ma gave a perfunctory grunt and turned her back into air. He picked up his pen and began scrawling again in his notebook.
Bai Yao could only catch a glimpse now and then. His lines were too chaotic for her to make out exactly what he was drawing, though it seemed to be a person.
Summer weather changed quickly. Just a few days ago the sun had been bright, but now the sky had turned overcast and a light rain had begun to fall.
Huo Ruanruan sat in a luxury car, glancing back at Huo Zhiyuan, who lay asleep behind her. Worry and an uncontrollable fear lurked in her heart.
Her second brother had actually killed someone not long ago, and had done something as cruel as dismembering the body. He must have gone mad.
The man driving wore a bespoke black suit. His features were sharp and elegant, and there was some resemblance between him and Huo Zhiyuan, though he looked more severe and cold.
He was the present head of the Huo family, the eldest son, Huo Mingyuan.
Huo Mingyuan was aloof and unsentimental, like a machine built only for work. Only when facing Huo Ruanruan did he allow his voice to soften with indulgent warmth.
“Ruanruan,” Huo Mingyuan said soothingly, “don’t be afraid. Zhiyuan will be fine.”
Huo Ruanruan asked uneasily, “Big brother, can this hospital really cure my second brother?”
Huo Mingyuan answered, “Lanshan Hospital has treated many psychiatric patients. Their experience is certainly richer than that of other hospitals. If even they can do nothing, then I’ll have to find a way to send Zhiyuan abroad.”
Huo Ruanruan bit her lip, the scene of Huo Zhiyuan murdering someone repeatedly flashing through her mind. She was still terrified.
The Huo family was vast and powerful, so influential that people said it could cover the sky with one hand. As a result, the matter of Huo Zhiyuan’s murder had not been exposed. As for the young man’s shattered remains, Huo Mingyuan had already ordered someone to deal with them.
Rumor had it they were taken to a private crematorium and burned to ashes. As for the house where Huo Zhiyuan’s blood-soaked crime scene had been, Huo Mingyuan feared the Huo family’s enemies might discover a trace of his brother’s crime, so he had the house burned down as well.
After various under-the-table arrangements, the whole matter was turned into an accidental fire. No one would ever know that the Huo family’s second young master had killed a man.
But Huo Zhiyuan had already gone insane. At that time, he had held the severed head in a death grip, frantically slicing away at its face, refusing to let anyone come near, and refusing to let anyone share the dead boy’s beauty.
Huo Ruanruan even began to wonder whether she too had lost her mind, otherwise why would she have seen that head smiling at her?
The mountain roads were treacherous in the rain, and today’s climb took much longer than usual.
Huo Mingyuan parked the car, and together with Huo Ruanruan he helped Huo Zhiyuan, who had been drugged with sleeping pills, out of the vehicle. A bus carrying other visitors up the mountain had also just pulled up beside them.
A few people got off in ones and twos.
The first to step down was a young man holding his phone, taking pictures everywhere he looked. When he saw Huo Mingyuan, he seemed to think the man looked vaguely familiar.
Next came an old man leaning on a cane. Though well past fifty, his eyes were still bright and observant as he surveyed the people and things around him.
After that came a woman. She was exquisitely dressed and beautiful, but upon seeing that the surroundings were rather shabby, her expression showed clear disdain.
Yet the moment she saw Huo Mingyuan, her eyes lit up. She hurried over in her high heels, took his arm, and called affectionately, “Mingyuan!”
Huo Ruanruan curled her lip. The woman was Hao Meili, the eldest daughter of the Hao family, and Huo Mingyuan’s fiancée of many years.
But it was only a business marriage. Huo Mingyuan did not like her at all, yet the woman was hopelessly persistent and followed him wherever he went.
Huo Mingyuan pulled his arm free and asked with displeasure, “What are you doing here?”
Hao Meili feigned innocence. “I heard second brother isn’t well, and you were bringing him to the hospital. I’m going to be his future sister-in-law, so of course I should come and show some concern.”
Huo Ruanruan said irritably, “You haven’t even married my brother yet. What kind of sister-in-law are you?”
A flicker of disgust appeared in Hao Meili’s eyes, but very quickly she smiled in a harmless way. “Ruanruan, your brother and I are engaged. Getting married is only a matter of time.”
What Huo Ruanruan disliked most about her was precisely this. Hao Meili clearly hated her, yet because she was the sister Huo Mingyuan cherished most, Hao Meili still put on this friendly act in front of her.
It was absurd. Huo Ruanruan had already fought with Bai Yao, that little green-tea bitch, so many times. How could she not tell that Hao Meili was the same sort of two-faced person?
The young man who had been taking photos with his phone walked over. “Are you Mr. Huo Mingyuan?”
He then said enthusiastically, “Hello, I’m Zhou An, a reporter from the Daily News.”
As he spoke, Reporter Zhou also cast a probing look at the unconscious Huo Zhiyuan. He had a hunch this would be big news.
Huo Mingyuan said, “I know your paper’s owner. He seemed to want to have a meal with me before, but unfortunately I didn’t have the time.”
Zhou An caught the implication and had no choice but to suppress his curiosity. A figure even his boss wanted to curry favor with was certainly not someone he could afford to offend.
At that moment, the last passenger got out of the car.
He was a young man in a black hoodie. He pulled down the hood that had covered most of his face, revealing a stunningly beautiful countenance beneath a head of white hair.
It was hard to say exactly what made him so striking, but the first time anyone saw him, their gaze was almost impossible to tear away.
Tall and slender, with a black backpack slung over his shoulders, he stood there as the white strands of his hair gleamed with moisture in the misty rain. Even the raindrops that seemed fortunate enough to kiss the teardrop mole beneath his left eye inspired envy and jealousy in others.
The instant his face was revealed, everyone looked at him.
Hao Meili covered her mouth involuntarily. “My heavens, how did I not notice there was someone this handsome on the bus before?”
Huo Mingyuan was also briefly beguiled by the young man’s appearance. But after only a moment, he came to his senses, his brow furrowing slightly as he did not understand why his self-control had suddenly become so poor. Yet the next second, he still could not help looking back at the boy in the rain and mist.
Huo Ruanruan’s eyes filled with amazement, and then with terror. She was trembling all over.
How could this be?
Was she really insane?
She had clearly seen this person being killed by her second brother!
Huo Zhiyuan, who had been asleep, slowly opened his eyes. In that instant, his gaze fell on the young man. Then, losing all reason, he became wildly agitated and tried to rush toward him.
Huo Mingyuan and Huo Ruanruan both held him back.
Huo Zhiyuan’s bloodshot eyes widened as he screamed, “You’re mine! You’re mine!”
The young man glanced over lazily, amusement tinged with contempt in his eyebrows and eyes. The voice that spilled from his vividly red lips was especially venomous. “How disgusting. An ugly, filthy pig.”
Huo Zhiyuan grew even more frenzied. He shouted and raved like a madman, successfully drawing the attention of the others who had also been lost in rapture.
The young man tipped up his face, his smiling gaze resting on the staff dormitory building in the distance. Humming an off-key tune, he bounced forward with light, eager steps, heading toward the hospital.
His girlfriend could not do without him. When she saw him, she would have to thank him properly. He had even stooped to come find her in person.
No one noticed that while Huo Zhiyuan was being pinned down and driven into madness, a small mole on the back of his neck gave a faint, subtle twitch.
Like a tumor of flesh, the swelling grew larger by a fraction. Beneath the skin, where it seemed on the verge of splitting, a tiny bud of flesh emerged, revealing a bizarre and vigorous life force.
