Fu Huai was far too clingy. Bai Yao had to spend some time in the morning giving him his reward before he would stop hanging onto her like a pendant. Fortunately, she still made it to work on time.

Today she was scheduled to accompany Dr. Ma to see the newly admitted patient. Upon discovering it was a familiar face, she couldn't help but remark that it was a small world indeed.

Huo Ruanruan's eyes widened. "What are you doing here?"

Bai Yao smiled. "I work here."

Huo Ruanruan stared at Bai Yao in her nurse's uniform—a garment that represented something sacred and pure. It actually looked fitting on her, provided you didn't know that Bai Yao was, in truth, a scheming two-faced woman.

Huo Mingyuan's brow furrowed slightly. Clearly, he didn't want to see Bai Yao either.

Hao Meili, glued to Huo Mingyuan's side, was the curious one, stealing a few extra glances at Bai Yao. Her reason was simple: whoever Huo Ruanruan hated, she liked.

Dr. Ma, however, cared nothing for whatever romantic grudges or personal vendettas existed between the Huo family and his assistant. In his eyes, they were simply the patient's relatives, and Bai Yao was his colleague.

Dr. Ma conducted a thorough examination of Huo Zhiyuan.

Huo Zhiyuan's deranged condition had grown increasingly severe. To prevent him from harming others or resisting examination, the hospital staff had no choice but to restrain him with straps.

Huo Zhiyuan had been sedated not long ago and was still sound asleep, lying like a slab of dead flesh as Dr. Ma went through his checks.

Bai Yao found it somewhat strange. Not long ago, Huo Zhiyuan had been swaggering before her, looking at her with the same gaze one might reserve for garbage. Now he lay on the hospital bed, gaunt and diminished, as though enduring some immense torment.

Huo Ruanruan kept staring at Bai Yao. She thought to herself, Thank goodness for this rain, which had kept her and her eldest brother here. If they'd left, they would never have known that Bai Yao worked in this very place—and who knew what schemes Bai Yao might cook up to target Huo Zhiyuan.

Dr. Ma received the results of Huo Zhiyuan's brain scan. He studied the images in his hand, his furrowed brow never once relaxing.

Huo Mingyuan asked, "Dr. Ma, is my second brother's condition serious?"

Though the three Huo brothers squabbled behind Huo Ruanruan's back, competing for her favor, they were still blood brothers. Huo Mingyuan genuinely cared about Huo Zhiyuan's well-being.

Dr. Ma said, "The test results show everything is normal."

Huo Ruanruan: "That's impossible! My second brother used to be perfectly normal—he became like this, all crazy, out of nowhere!"

Huo Zhiyuan could never have killed anyone before. He was the top star in the entertainment industry, a celebrity who obsessed over his appearance and public image. How could he possibly have turned himself into a madman?

Dr. Ma's gaze rested on the figure lying in the bed. He was silent for a long moment before speaking. "It is precisely because everything appears normal that something is amiss."

The Huo family lived together day in and day out, so perhaps they wouldn't notice anything different. But Bai Yao looked at Huo Zhiyuan and vaguely felt that his appearance seemed to have changed slightly compared to before.

Yet she couldn't pinpoint exactly what had changed.

Just then, Huo Zhiyuan slowly opened his eyes. Having just woken, he looked at his surroundings with a hint of bewilderment, his gaze drifting over the people standing in the room until, at last, it settled firmly on Bai Yao.

He tried to move, but the restraints on the bed held him fast. Unable to break free, he struggled ceaselessly, his overly intense gaze fixed in Bai Yao's direction.

"Second Brother!" Huo Ruanruan rushed to the bedside, her voice full of concern. "Second Brother, do you recognize me? I'm Ruanruan."

Huo Zhiyuan's gaze did not shift. He looked at Bai Yao and broke into a smile, his dark eyes filled with a sick, obsessive infatuation. Curling his lips, he called out in a saccharine voice, "Yao Yao... Yao Yao..."

Everyone turned to look at Bai Yao.

Bai Yao: "Huh?"

Huo Zhiyuan kept trying to move toward Bai Yao, and the restraints kept pulling his body back onto the bed. But he was tireless, attempting again and again, murmuring her name between breaths. "Yao Yao Yao Yao Yao Yao..."

His words grew faster and faster, like a machine that had malfunctioned and gotten stuck. In the white hospital room, it was deeply unsettling.

Huo Ruanruan turned to Bai Yao furiously. "What exactly did you do to my second brother?!"

Bai Yao was baffled. "What could I possibly do to your second brother?"

She had only met Huo Zhiyuan a handful of times. Every single time, it had been him picking a fight with her on behalf of Huo Ruanruan. His sneering sarcasm had always been fired right back at him, yet the next time he saw Bai Yao, he'd start his taunting all over again.

But the way Huo Zhiyuan looked at Bai Yao now was clearly not that of an enemy. Anyone would believe he was deeply, desperately in love with her.

Why else would his eyes instinctively seek out Bai Yao the moment he woke, ignoring even his dearest, most beloved sister Huo Ruanruan?

Huo Zhiyuan called Bai Yao's name over and over. He struggled for a long time but could not get any closer to her. His agitation grew, and he pulled harder against the restraints, stretching them taut, utterly indifferent to the pain he was causing himself.

He shouted, "Yao Yao! Yao Yao!"

Then he burst into sobs, like a child denied his favorite toy. "Yao Yao, come love me... come love me..."

Seeing that Huo Zhiyuan was about to hurt himself, Huo Mingyuan and Huo Ruanruan quickly reached out to hold him down and stop him from thrashing.

Hao Meili was startled by the scene. Covering her mouth, she said in shock, "Huo Zhiyuan is actually this in love with Nurse Bai?"

Bai Yao felt like she was hearing a fairy tale. "Huh? Are you kidding me?"

She knew full well that she was naturally beautiful, flawless, possessing both looks and grace—the kind of person people found easy to like. But the Huo family believed she had bullied their little princess and despised her for it. How could anyone in that family possibly like her?

Dr. Ma suddenly spoke up. "Bai Yao, try to calm him down."

Bai Yao was a person who kept things separate—personal feelings were personal, professional integrity was professional. She followed Dr. Ma's advice and stepped forward a few paces.

Whether it was because she had drawn closer, her presence seeming to stir something in the man on the bed, Huo Zhiyuan stopped struggling. He simply stared at her, unblinking, his breathing rapid and shallow.

As if Bai Yao were a choice cut of meat, and he a wild beast desperate to sink his teeth into it.

Bai Yao bent slightly, softening her voice as much as she could. "Calm down. Whatever you want to say, we'll all stay right here with you."

Huo Zhiyuan's eyes turned red, tears slowly welling up. He blinked his tear-stained eyes and said, his voice pitiful and pleading, "Yao Yao, come love me. Hurry up and come love me..."

He sniffled again—a grown man, crying more miserably than a child of five.

Hao Meili let out a "Wow." "Now that's true love."
