Chapter 64: Breaking the Prison (3)
As the magical barrier rose, the entire Spark Prison instantly plunged into chaos.
The guards on the watchtowers had never encountered such a situation and were completely at a loss for a moment.
"You few, head down immediately and see what on earth is happening at the control hub!" A tower commander shouted loudly from a nearby watchtower.
Two warriors, leading a squad of soldiers, rushed down the watchtower and bolted toward the warden's small white building.
A piercing, formidable arrow, trailing a light as frigid as ice and snow, cut through the vast sky and struck straight at the chest of the lead warrior.
The moment the arrowhead pierced forward, a flash of white light carrying an icy chill burst forth. A vast sheet of frost instantly blanketed the warrior's entire body, freezing him into a statue. The powerful arrow smashed straight through his chest into the core of the ice, shattering the human ice sculpture into a sky full of powdery dust.
"Enemy attack! We are under attack!" The shrill, piercing roar echoed across the desolate expanse.
The alarm bell rang out in a split second, sounding like thunder from the ninth heaven, reverberating through the skies above Spark Prison. The magical energy barrier flickered with brilliant sparks, ruthlessly sealing all sound within its perimeter.
"Defend the perimeter! Protect the watchtowers!" Someone screamed hysterically.
Fixed mindset patterns caused the prison guards to make a grave mistake.
In the past, magical barriers were always used to deal with escaping enemies. The job of the watchtower guards was to protect the magical towers and prevent the barrier from being destroyed. Long-formed habits of thought made their primary reaction in moments of crisis to protect the towers, to the extent that they completely failed to realize that when enemies appeared from within and their objective was not to break out of the prison, but rather to slaughter everyone, the very purpose of this magical barrier underwent a massive transformation.
Had they been able to make a prompt decision and immediately shatter the forty-two magic orbs atop the towers, they would have still had a sliver of hope for survival. However, their sense of duty—where protecting the prison from attack was the vocation of every guard—dictated their immediate reaction to counterattack the adversary.
This was precisely what Huey had calculated.
He was gambling that the guards here, lacking clear intelligence on the enemy, would choose to remain loyal to their duties.
Consequently, some of the warriors and mages chose to stay on the watchtowers to guard against enemy attacks, while other warriors, accompanied by ordinary soldiers, rushed out from the towers.
Lurking in the shadows, Lilith's green eyes flashed with excitement.
She poked out her tongue to lick her slightly dry lips, slowly drawing her bow and nocking a multicolored mini arrow.
Aimed at the lead warrior, with a swift release and draw, a dazzling rainbow streaked across the sky. The mottled colors burst into a riot of vivid brilliance amidst the dark night mist, resembling countless flowers scattering from the heavens, carrying a desolate tint of death.
"It's the Rainbow's Wound! Everyone, dodge!" A warrior roared the battle command at the top of his lungs.
Rainbow's Wound was an advanced enchantment technique. Once any weapon was imbued with this spell, it unleashed a wide-area, multi-target destructive attack. Because the lethality of this spell was far too immense, it could not be used with melee weapons—otherwise, the user would suffer collateral damage—so it only ever appeared on ranged weapons.
During the era of the Centenary War, the longbowman units loved nothing more than arrows imbued with the Rainbow's Wound. Countless Rainbow's Wound arrows falling amidst enemy formations acted like artillery shells, delivering a terrifying area-of-effect carnage. Yet, as resources grew scarce and time passed, enchanted arrows like the Rainbow's Wound became increasingly rare. Even now, only a handful of individuals in the military were equipped with them, and only the finest master archers in the armed forces were qualified to use them.
Vast waves of variegated rainbow light radiated hundreds of rays of death across the sky. Behind the gorgeous colors lay a heartbreaking tidal wave of death.
Some of the faster-reacting warriors managed to dodge or stubbornly endure this terrifying spell of light using their battle aura energy, but the ordinary soldiers suffered a thorough baptism of absolute death.
Countless screams rose and fell in succession. In a single instant, dozens of soldiers had their lives taken by this single enchanted arrow.
A satisfied smile bloomed on her face. This arrow was not crafted for her by Huey; rather, during her studies, she had attempted to make it for herself using the methods Huey taught her and the materials he provided.
Perhaps due to her nature as a warrior, Lilith had a stronger affinity for weapon-enchanting alchemy. This was not Huey's area of expertise, fortunately, Electra's notebooks contained some records regarding this subject. Through self-directed research, the woman had rapidly mastered several of these advanced enchantment capabilities.
Interest is forever the source of talent.
Whatever you love, you are a genius at.
Even Lilith herself did not know how astonishingly fast her achievements and progress in weapon enchanting were.
"Pity it only unleashed sixty percent of its effect, otherwise those few warriors wouldn't have escaped either," Lilith muttered to herself. She resolved to thoroughly restudy it upon returning to enhance its destructive power.
"Careful! The enemy has enchanted arrows!" The shrill cry of a survivor echoed from afar: "We need mages!"
Forty-two watchtowers meant forty-two mages.
From more than a dozen nearby watchtowers, figures rushed out once again, hurrying desperately, clustered by warriors.
Two mages, the moment they arrived, immediately began chanting incantations aloud, releasing Shields of Light.
That was the most effective spell for resisting the Rainbow's Wound.
With the Shields of Light in place, the destructive power of the Rainbow's Wound was drastically reduced, and the survivors reorganized their ranks, preparing to charge the passage.
"I've been waiting for you," Lilith whispered softly, nocking yet another crystal-clear, translucent mini arrow onto her bow.
This time, she shot it straight into the sky.
Before the dazzling colors in the heavens had faded, countless specks of starlight flashed once more. In the pitch-black night, it felt as though thousands of stars had descended simultaneously, plunging a sky full of starlight downwards.
"It's Meteor Fall!" The terrifying, hysterical cry pushed the overwhelming dread in people's hearts to a trembling extreme.
Meteor Fall was yet another area-of-effect enchantment spell similar to the Rainbow's Wound.
Unlike the lethal light beams of the Rainbow's Wound, Meteor Fall brought countless airborne meteors crashing down with the ferocity of comets. If the Rainbow's Wound could only affect living beings, then Meteor Fall indiscriminately assaulted everything targetable.
Some warriors hiding behind cover could only emit helpless cries of despair as they watched countless massive meteors in the sky smash down upon them.
"No!"
Countless rays of battle aura flickered as the warriors attempted to use their own power to stubbornly resist this terrifying spell. Blood boiled and burned within their chests, causing the entire Spark Prison to tremble violently as a result.
Yet the most wretched of all were the mages who had come to assist.
There were no high-level mages in Spark Prison; the vast majority of them were merely tier two or tier three. After all, their duty was to guard the magic orbs, not to engage in external combat. As a prison, no matter how grand its scale, the Empire could not afford to station forty-two mages above tier four here as guards—that would be a colossal waste of magical resources. If they truly did that, the empire might run out of mages just trying to staff its prisons.
Yet precisely because of this, in a real battle, the actual utility these mages could provide was very minimal.
Huey's vision was ruthlessly sharp and accurate. He keenly perceived that the seemingly impregnable defense of Spark Prison was built upon the tight cooperation between personnel and facilities. Once this link was broken and they were isolated into separate components, so-called impregnable defense forces were actually nothing more than a joke.
Once the Dark-Scaled Beast Knights were lured away by a nonexistent band of thieves, the true combat-capable strength of Spark Prison had already been drastically reduced. This was precisely why Huey possessed absolute confidence in his ability to slaughter every guard here.
When that barrage of meteor showers subsided, the entire scene had been battered into utter devastation. Aside from three of the highest-tier warriors, no one else survived.
The dozen-plus tower mages who had rushed to assist were thoroughly pulverized into unrecognizable, bloody pulp.
"No!" A surviving warrior screamed out.
Three icy mini arrows pierced through the obstacles amidst the cry, enveloping the final warriors in vast waves of freezing aura.
In that moment, it was as though the ice and snow of the polar world had descended upon the three warriors, enshrouding them in arctic frost, shaping them into humanoid ice sculptures, and in the final split second, transforming them into shattered blocks of ice that drifted away into nothingness, vanishing from this world.
The two successive batches of men were thus thoroughly wiped out by Lilith using just a few enchanted arrows.
If Igor's combat in the safe zone was filled with gloomy treachery, relying primarily on assassination methods, then Lilith's interception was an upright, frontal assault. Using those flamboyant enchanted arrows, she blocked every enemy charge and extinguished every life, while simultaneously plunging everyone's hearts into a profound sense of sorrow.
Faced with this ferocious and terrifying strike, a roaring wave of shocked panic erupted all around. The guards on the watchtowers stared dumbfounded at this breathtaking scene, unhealable fear flashing across their brows.
Deepening their terror was a massive roar echoing from afar, the sound of countless demonic beasts going berserk and breaking out of their cages.
The vast horde of demonic beasts, which should have originally assisted the guards in defense and surveillance, suddenly and inexplicably went collectively wild and deranged, roaring as they charged out of their cages and rampaged blindly everywhere. To make matters worse, these fellows fled directly into the trap zone, which was littered with mechanisms and snares.
The triggered traps and mechanisms erupted like the grandest fireworks on a holiday: winds, snows, lightning, and thunder intertwined, magical energy saturated the air, and towering flames shot into the sky, weaving a gorgeous and brilliant spectacle that left onlookers staring agape. Under the powerful assaults of the trap zone, the demonic beasts emitted frantic wails, driving them to run even more violently while simultaneously tripping off even more trap configurations.
Frantically surging toxic smoke blanketed the skies over the entire region; lightning traps frequently cleaved thrilling electric arcs down from the heavens, while countless stray arrows darted frantically through the ocean of storms and energy, pinning demonic beast after demonic beast to the ground. Every mechanism in the trap zone possessed its own unique function and was not easily triggered. Yet the attackers seemed to have long known how to counter these mechanisms, employing destruction methods that were simple yet brutal, direct yet effective.
What on earth had caused all of this to happen?
When that earth-shaking roar finally resounded, the appearance of a gigantic dragon in people's field of vision revealed the mystery at last.
People stared in astonishment to discover that there was actually a dragon present in this battle.
And standing atop that colossal beast was a middle-aged man draped in crimson battle robes.
His tall figure stood upright atop the dragon, radiating a powerful aura of battle aura that blocked every attack directed at him.
In his hand, he held a peculiar energy orb; with every flash it emitted, a trap was neutralized. For areas the demonic beasts had not traversed or triggered, Bryan Buckler and Xu personally stepped in to resolve them.
This type of energy orb was precisely the energy-triggering device Huey had manufactured specifically for the trap zone here.
Amidst the fireworks filling the sky and countless wails of agony, the two most vital defensive sectors of Spark Prison were thus effortlessly dismantled.
"No matter how powerful a defense is, it always has weaknesses. The stronger the defense, the greater the backlash." That was Igor's targeted evaluation of Spark Prison.
Like the arrival of the apocalypse, the skies above Spark Prison were filled with terrifying sights.
Faced with this series of frantic assaults, the prison guards no longer knew what to do.
They could not fathom what kind of people were attacking this prison. The blockers could continuously deploy powerful, exorbitant enchanted arrows, while the destroyer of the traps employed methods that looked simple yet were saturated with a profound understanding and mastery of alchemy.
Could these be elite agents dispatched by the Frank Empire? The thought flashed through everyone's minds simultaneously. Only a nation-level offensive could produce such formidable foes.
This erroneous perception dealt a heavy blow to the guards' morale. For a time, their offensive momentum ceased, and the men on the watchtowers lingered at their posts, completely at a loss for what to do.
The best defense is offense; using ferocious carnage to deter the enemy is the absolute best way to intercept them.
Lilith settled into a bow stance and nocked an arrow, her eyes projecting a cold frost.
Her petite lips parted slightly, freezing into an ancient, unchanging smile like frost.
"Mission accomplished," she murmured softly.
Her gaze pierced through the profound darkness, landing on the path leading to the detention zone.
There, Huey Girelle was leading his magical puppet step by step toward the paradise leading to freedom.
In the sky, two blazing firebirds flew freely, spitting raging flames at the guards across all the watchtowers.
When the enemy was forced into a defensive posture, their own offensive had only just begun...
