Chapter 111: If It Won't Break, Your Firepower Is Simply Insufficient
Half an hour later, Lin Mu had manufactured a full 4,000 artillery shells. The primary consumption was general-purpose materials, which posed little problem for him.
"Prepare for a forty-round salvo! Fire!"
Anna watched a battle that far exceeded the capabilities of her own planet. If shells like these were to land on her, she suspected there wouldn't even be fragments left behind. If this was just the capability of these men, then any city equipped with such armaments would be practically invincible.
Had Lin Mu known her thoughts, he would have scoffed. This was barely scratching the surface; if he had a Dongfeng missile at his disposal, a single strike would have sent these people packing home instantly.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Under the relentless bombardment, cracks began to appear in the town's protective barrier.
"This is bad! The barrier is about to shatter! Go and fetch the Great Elder!"
"No need, I am already here."
A white-haired man clad in armor stepped forward. He looked at the barrier in the sky with a grave expression. "The situation is dire; everyone prepare to evacuate!"
The explosions in the sky resembled those of magic crystal cannons, though the effect was slightly inferior. However, the sheer volume of fire was something magic crystal cannons could never hope to match.
"Everyone! Get to the rear! Quickly, move, move!"
"Take everything! All spatial storage devices—fill them with supplies! Leave nothing behind!"
They certainly wanted to, but it was impossible.
"It’s no use! There’s too much; we can't carry it all."
There were eight warehouses in total, containing all the supplies they had gathered over the years; it was simply too much to transport. The Great Elder glanced at the sky and waved his hand. "Leave the goods. Give them to these people; as long as we survive, we can always acquire more later."
The barrier was clearly on the verge of breaking. Once it shattered, the energy of the protective formation would dissipate, and restoring it would take at least a year of searching for the necessary energy-providing materials. In that time, they would have already found a new location.
Three minutes later, the shelling ceased.
"Stow the artillery. The convoy moves out. Target: the town."
"Copy that!"
"Copy that!"
One could hear the extreme excitement in the voices over the radio. They hadn't forgotten the events of the day; that barrier had been completely impervious to their heavy machine guns, and the people inside possessed formidable combat prowess. But now, they had won.
Anna stood behind Lin Mu, staring at the scene on the screen in shock. A group of ordinary people had actually managed to break through a protective barrier using nothing but external tools—how was this possible? What kind of planet did they come from? Even the mechanical races could only break such barriers through their own immense personal strength. Yet these were just ordinary humans. What kind of weapons were these?
Lin Mu’s gear went far beyond her understanding. On her planet, commoners relied on cold weapons, and such ultra-powerful armaments were strictly controlled by mages. Even if they used magic crystals for energy, they still required a mage's mana to operate.
...
The convoy drove into the town; it was just half-past twelve. In other words, only half an hour had passed from the start of the assault to their entry.
After parking the vehicle, Lin Mu stepped out wearing a suit of armor he had newly crafted. It was a mixture of steel and mithril, providing a certain degree of protection against both magic and battle qi. If he himself knew how to use magic or battle qi, the equipment would have even provided a boost. Unfortunately, he did not.
"Search the place. See if there’s anything useful, and watch your safety."
"Don't worry, those people have definitely fled."
The men scattered to begin their search. As for Anna, Lin Mu did not let her or Shu Xin leave; he figured that if he encountered something he didn't recognize, he could just ask her.
As he walked, Lin Mu arrived before a large gate. Looking at it, it certainly appeared to be a warehouse.
Bang!
He kicked the door open. Sure enough, it was filled with various ores, timber, and gold and silver utensils. Among a pile of artifacts, Lin Mu spotted a long sword that was entirely silver-white, emitting a faint white glow. It looked somewhat similar to the Holy Flame Cross.
Lin Mu picked up the sword and walked over to Anna, who quickly took a step back.
"Big brother, look how obedient I am now. Please don't point that thing at me." Anna looked at the sword in Lin Mu's hand with terror.
Black lines appeared on Lin Mu's forehead, and he was left speechless. "I was just going to ask you what this sword is. Is it really necessary to react like that?"
"It looks like a holy sword used by the Holy See, though I don't know why it would be in the hands of these people."
Both the style and the design were very similar to the weapons of the Holy See on her planet. However, Anna was certain that the people in this town were not from her world; their clothing, equipment, and language were all completely different.
"Then how did they get these things? I saw several more over there."
Lin Mu had only encountered this one town and these few people during his time here. To suggest they had looted them seemed far-fetched; if they had the strength to take such items, they probably wouldn't have ended up in a place like this.
"Who knows." Anna shrugged. In her view, these items must have been stolen.
Lin Mu rubbed his chin, unable to help but think of the novels he used to read. People from various planes all worshipped a god, and the god would descend or manifest to compete for faith. Could it be possible that the people of this planet and the people of Anna's planet were ruled by the same god?
The more Lin Mu thought about it, the more reasonable it seemed. Perhaps this game itself was being operated by that god.
Searching took a long time. An hour later, everyone gathered together again.
"Captain, the eight warehouses held at least half of the total supplies. A portion was taken, but there is still a massive amount left."
"Captain, we found several offices in the town center containing many handwritten notebooks and books."
"Captain, there isn't a single living soul left in the town; they must have run off. Besides that, we found a tunnel, but we didn't dare send anyone inside."
Lin Mu nodded. "Get some rocks and seal that tunnel off completely."
In truth, blowing it up would have been the best method, but Lin Mu wanted to keep it just in case it proved useful later.
"Discuss among yourselves how to handle the shifts. If you spot an enemy, sound the alarm immediately."
"Yes!"
Guided by the chubby man, Lin Mu arrived at the aforementioned offices. The interior was simple: a bookshelf, a desk, and a chair. There were four offices in total across two floors, and the one at the very back of the second floor was the largest.
Lin Mu sat in the chair and opened a notebook on the desk. Even though the text was clearly something he shouldn't recognize, he could understand the meaning. This must be one of the game's functions.
"June 2nd, 3000, New Divine Calendar: When I awoke, I found myself in a towering structure..."
