Chapter 138: Bring Them All Here to Work
Anna’s mouth twitched. "Other spirits have too high an alcohol content; they don't suit me."
She would have preferred beer—that cool, crisp beverage was so delightful. However, the last time she had finished five glasses, she had collapsed on the spot. Back on her own planet, she could easily down an entire barrel. After refusing to believe it and trying a few more times, she had finally come to a clear realization about her own limits. This type of wine was much better suited to her, and she was determined to drink it, even if no one else liked it. It was the only thing that came close to the beverages from her home world. Of course, she had experimented with rum and tequila, but the result was always the same: one glass and she was out. Heaven knows if the drinks here were spiked with sedatives.
...
Because Lin Mu had become the new master, the color of the city began to slowly fade from its dark hue. Based on the current progress, it would likely return to its original appearance in about half a year. Inside the city’s administrative building, Lin Mu was reviewing the books left behind. These were the diaries and notes of the vampires. Through them, he learned that the vampires had lived in this city for over eight years, having been pulled into the game just like him, and were among the survivors.
The notebook didn't just record their own history; it also mentioned a location—a large city over 8,000 kilometers away. That city was inhabited by the human race, the same race as his own, and they possessed a level of technology similar to his. Lin Mu closed the notebook; he had no intention of heading there just yet. He planned to use this place as a base of operations to develop his strength first. Only with a solid foundation could he expand outwards. But before that, he needed to get his hands on a map.
Without further ado, Lin Mu initiated the defense battle. A medium-sized city defense was much more intense than a small town defense. The duration was 72 hours, far longer than before.
"Same rules as always: each squad is responsible for one sector."
A medium-sized city had the added advantage of a five-meter-wide wall. It had to be utilized. "Get people up on the walls and have them blast away with the cannons. The first wave should just be magical beasts; it won't be much of a problem."
Everyone mobilized. They weren't worried about the creatures from the first two days, and as expected, the enemies were the same as those from the small town. While some species had undergone minor changes, it had little impact on them. This time, instead of four electromagnetic railguns, they had ten. With several distributed to the others and the protection of ten railguns, no creature could even get close to the energy shield.
The protective array, which Lin Mu had reinstalled with mysterious elements, didn't even consume a sliver of energy.
At night, after arranging the guard shifts, Lin Mu went to rest. He hadn't been asleep long, however, before he was woken up.
"Captain! It's bad! Something is attacking from the wilderness."
Lin Mu scratched his hair. "If they're attacking, just fight back. Is that so difficult?"
"But... but these things won't die! They look just like the skeletons from novels!"
Hm? Lin Mu was instantly wide awake. If that were truly the case, there had to be a necromancer, right?! If he could control him... Heh heh heh... Lin Mu was suddenly energized.
"Attention all squad leaders: tell your subordinates to engage only the skeletons in close proximity; don't touch the ones further away. Then, deploy the drones and find me the person pulling the strings."
He didn't know if they were native to this world, but since they had come, they weren't leaving. He just didn't know if he could keep them here.
"Yes!"
Drones took to the sky, and Lin Mu launched several of his own. The monitors displayed the scene outside: mountains and plains filled with skeletons, coming from all four directions.
"001, find their hiding spot. They should be at the very back."
"Understood, Master."
If he succeeded this time, he wouldn't plan to wipe out all the enemies in future defense battles. Instead, he would save a portion of them to use as combat personnel.
The endless waves of skeletons kept charging. Despite being met with countless shells, some still managed to push forward, but they caused negligible damage to the shield. Lin Mu couldn't be bothered to pay them any mind; finding the culprit was his top priority.
"Report! A group of headless knights has suddenly appeared. How should we respond?"
"Same as before."
"Yes!"
Lin Mu’s eyes grew more excited. There was actually stuff like this? It seemed he needed to apply more pressure. He grabbed his walkie-talkie: "Push the front line out to five kilometers and provide full-firepower coverage." He wanted to see what else they would unleash if they couldn't break through.
Ten kilometers to the east, five elders in black robes with pale, ashen faces looked at the front line with blank expressions.
"This seems a bit difficult. Can we even win this?"
"It's fine. They don't dare come out either. There should still be a chance."
"Where exactly is this place? Why did the Master of the Undead send us here?"
"Why worry about that? Serving the Master of the Undead is our honor."
Looking at the distant city, one of the elders summoned ten bone dragons. He refused to believe the bone dragons couldn't win. Yet, they truly couldn't; after a few blasts from the enemy, they were reduced to shattered bones that couldn't even reform.
"Found them!"
Lin Mu hurried to 001 and saw the five figures on a small hill in the east.
"Damn, there are only five of them?" Lin Mu clicked his tongue in disbelief. Five people summoning an army of skeletons across the mountains and plains—that was absurd. But he loved it; the more absurd, the better. "Continue searching the other sectors."
"Captain! Four men and one woman discovered on the west side."
"North side..."
Targets were found in all four directions. Since that was the case, it was time to move.
"You all guard this place."
Lin Mu's shelter began to transform, shifting into a helicopter, and flew straight toward the east. Seeing the mechanical object approaching from the distance, the five elders frowned. What kind of thing was that? They hurriedly summoned new bone dragons, but they were blocked by a yellow energy shield.
"Oh no, it's a protective array! What do we do?"
There was no way to retreat now. A reverse-summoning array required the Master of the Undead to activate, and they didn't know that kind of magic.
Just then, a figure descended from the sky.
Boom!
Dust filled the air as a massive crater appeared before them.
Whoosh!
001 rushed out of the crater in an instant, subdued the five of them with a few swift movements, and casually clamped five restraint collars around their necks. The five elders touched the items around their necks in a daze, wondering what was happening.
The helicopter landed, and Lin Mu stepped out.
"Hi there. Welcome to the team."
Zzzzt!
A surge of electricity coursed through the five of them.
"It's a telepathic control array!"
The complexions of the five elders shifted in sheer terror.
