“Should be sturdy enough, right?” Lin Mu wasn’t entirely certain himself. He continued, “No need to worry about this. The inside of the car is safe; this is just to let you walk outside safely.”

It was only the distance from one vehicle to another. They didn’t need to fight any wild creatures; what did it matter how sturdy it was?

Shu Yi and the chubby boy both nodded.

Lin Mu’s gaze shifted to Wang Changjun. “You, get out and walk a couple of laps.”

Wang Changjun glanced around, then pointed at himself in disbelief. “Me?”

Lin Mu nodded. “Yes, you. We’re fair here—every time, it’s someone different. Last time it was Jiang Ying. This time, it’s your turn.”

Gu Wanqing, standing beside Jiang Ying, looked surprised. She’d thought it would be her this time, not the newcomer. If that was the case, perhaps this man was destined to be abandoned in the end.

Wang Changjun was reluctant. “Can I have a set of equipment, at least?”

Lin Mu let out a scornful laugh. “Trying to bargain with me? Just go. Don’t worry, you won’t die.”

Ah, well. Under the eaves, one has to bow their head.

Wang Changjun opened the car door and stepped out. He pressed himself close to the vehicle, running two quick laps before scrambling back inside. The first thing he did was check his body for any problems.

Ten minutes passed, and Wang Changjun was still fine. Lin Mu nodded. It seemed that staying near the vehicles was indeed safe.

He called Shu Yi and the chubby boy, and they got out. Lin Mu took out two more vehicles.

“Remember, always stay right behind me—don’t wander off. If I go into the grass to look for resource crates, you two stay put. I’ll come back for you.”

Both nodded solemnly. After all, their safety was at stake.

Lin Mu checked himself—nothing felt wrong. Could it be that only the fog was poisonous? If so, there wasn’t much danger. Even the worst car had at least ten meters of safe space around it. So what was the point of the antidote? What were their protective suits for? Lin Mu shook his head. He couldn’t make sense of it. Surely that voice wasn’t just playing tricks on everyone?

He returned to the car and started the engine. The two vehicles behind followed closely, not daring to relax for a moment.

After ten kilometers, they reached the first fork in the road. This time, Lin Mu stopped.

“Damn it... this is intentional, isn’t it?” Ahead was not a crossroads, but a three-way junction. They could go left or right—no straight ahead.

If the resource crates hadn’t always been placed on the road before, Lin Mu would have insisted on going straight. But now, continuing straight meant missing the resource crates.

He sighed. This damned game really didn’t let you off easy, always forcing choices upon you. He had no choice but to pick a direction at random.

...

An hour passed.

Lin Mu eyed the empty road suspiciously, then checked the odometer. He’d definitely driven a hundred kilometers—still nothing. Clearly, the resource crate locations were now unpredictable.

He kept driving, and another junction appeared up ahead. Staring at the massive intersection, Lin Mu’s eye twitched. Was this a star intersection? From the last resource crate to here, he’d encountered T-junctions, three-way splits, crossroads—those were normal enough. But five different roads splitting off ahead? This was a first.

Maybe he was just ignorant, but this was ridiculous.

Lin Mu scratched his head. He’d just have to pick a road at random. He couldn’t help but grumble—no wonder resource crates were so hard to find. Plenty of people would miss them entirely.

“Reporting, Master. The resource crate is on the other road,” the voice of 001 reported from the projected radar.

Lin Mu’s mouth twitched. Damn! What a trap.

He glanced at the fog on the side of the road. Poor souls, he thought.

He picked up the walkie-talkie. “Stick close behind me, you two. We’ll cut straight across the grassland.”

“Roger!”

“Roger!”

Lin Mu turned the steering wheel and drove toward the right, covering over two hundred meters before reaching the other road.

Perhaps this was what people called a shortcut.

After joining the new road and driving another two hundred meters or so, a stack of resource crates appeared in front of him.

This time, he’d driven over two hundred kilometers to find them—truly difficult.

After once again reminding his two companions, Lin Mu went to collect the crates in the grass.

[Congratulations, you have opened a Silver Resource Crate: obtained 30 Mithril Ingots, 10 bottles of 1L cooking oil, 30 antidote vials.]

[Congratulations, you have opened an Iron Resource Crate: obtained 30 Copper Ingots, 10 loaves of 500g bread.]

[Congratulations, you have opened a Bronze Resource Crate: obtained 20 packs of 100g beef, 10 packs of 100g tea leaves, 10 [Vehicle-Mounted Heavy Machine Gun Component Blueprints (S)].]

Wait!

What did he just see?

Heavy machine gun components!

A spark flashed in Lin Mu’s mind—he remembered the panel once said components would unlock after fourteen days. He’d always thought it meant after surviving this set of fourteen days, but it was actually after the fourteen days of the Infernal Heat stage.

Well, at last there were proper modification tools for hot weapons.

He’d thought about modifying an AK or a shotgun before, but loading ammunition was always a problem. Even with the mustard stone to increase ammo capacity, automatic reloading was impossible. So, he’d dismantled both weapons. Unfortunately, after disassembling, he couldn’t use them anymore and ended up tossing them in the recycling bin. Fortunately, he’d only used spare guns, or he’d have been in real trouble.

Hopefully, this new component had auto-reloading. Otherwise, it would be another useless weapon.

Half an hour later, Lin Mu had collected all the resource crates and parked his car in the middle of the road. He quickly opened the workbench.

[Vehicle-Mounted Heavy Machine Gun Component]: Requires 100 iron ingots, 10 copper ingots, 1 silver ingot, 50 units of universal material, 5 mustard stones, 5 electronic parts.

Quite a few materials needed.

Lin Mu raised his eyebrows. He’d thought metal would be enough, but mustard stones too?

None of these materials posed any difficulty for him.

He crafted the component immediately.

Once it was ready, Lin Mu opened the vehicle information panel. The previously locked vehicle component slots were now available. He frowned. Only three components could be added? That was stingy. And their positions were fixed: front, roof, and rear.

Studying the vehicle diagram, he mounted the heavy machine gun on the roof.

He closed the panel, excitement lighting up his face.

Just as he envisioned it, a black hatch opened on the roof and a vehicle-mounted heavy machine gun rose into place.

“Let’s...”
