Chapter 120: He Is Too Old; Not Suitable for Little Deer
When Di Jiaer saw Huo Yanfang, he immediately breathed a sigh of relief. “Brother Sui, you live here too? That’s wonderful. Hurry, help me explain! There’s no time to waste. Little Lu fell into the sea and now has a very high fever. We need to get a doctor to her immediately—”
Huo Yanfang had already scooped Bai Lu up into his arms. “Come in.”
Di Jiaer nodded and stepped into the elevator.
The family doctor tried to follow, but Tang Xing stopped him with a beaming smile.
Di Jiaer hurriedly explained, “Doctor Zhang is my—”
“There’s no need to trouble him. We have a doctor at home.” Tang Xing smiled, then said to the family doctor, “Thank you for coming all this way so late at night. Naturally, we’ll pay your consultation fee…”
The elevator doors had already closed.
Di Jiaer wanted to explain the situation to Huo Yanfang, but the moment he called, “Brother Sui—” Huo Yanfang cut him off.
“We’ll talk later.”
Ding.
The elevator doors opened, and Huo Yanfang strode out with Bai Lu in his arms. Di Jiaer hurried after him.
A middle-aged woman wearing an apron stood at the entrance. When she saw Bai Lu unconscious in his arms, the smile vanished from her face. “Mr. Huo, what happened to Little Lu?”
“She fell into the sea,” Di Jiaer quickly replied.
An elderly man with snow-white hair but an energetic, vigorous appearance came over carrying a medical case. “Auntie Li, change Little Lu into some dry clothes first. I’ll examine her afterward.”
“Oh, all right! All right!”
The bedroom door closed, leaving only Auntie Li inside.
Soon, Auntie Li opened the door again, and the white-haired old man went in.
Bai Lu lay on the bed, her cheeks growing unnaturally red. She breathed heavily, her chest rising and falling, her delicate brows pinched together in discomfort.
Her body had curled into a ball, and she murmured, “Cold… so cold…”
“It’s all right. There’s no frostbite, and she hasn’t inhaled enough water to develop pneumonia. It’s just an ordinary fever.” The old man tucked Bai Lu’s arm back beneath the covers, opened his medical case, and took out a temperature gun to check her forehead.
“Thirty-nine point two degrees. Give her fever medicine for now. If the fever hasn’t gone down by tomorrow, she’ll have to be taken to the hospital.”
Hearing that it was only an ordinary fever, Di Jiaer let out a breath of relief. Beside him, he heard Brother Sui release a heavy sigh as well.
“Mr. Huo… help me hold her.”
Huo Yanfang went over and sat on the edge of the bed. He supported Bai Lu by the shoulders with both hands, letting her lean against his chest.
The old man spoke again. “Water.”
Auntie Li said, “Oh, right! I’ll get some!”
Bai Lu’s delicate brows were tightly knitted, her teeth clenched together as her small body trembled without pause.
Huo Yanfang tried several times, but he could not pry her mouth open.
Supporting her chin with one hand, he said, “Bai Lu, be good. Open your mouth.”
Her long eyelashes trembled, then quivered again. It seemed she was trying very hard to open her eyes.
Her damp head rubbed against his neck as she murmured and whimpered something indistinct.
“It’s me, A-Sui.” He closed his hand around her burning fingers. “Be good. Open your mouth and take your medicine.”
Bai Lu obediently opened her mouth. Huo Yanfang placed the fever medicine inside, then took the glass of water from Auntie Li and held it to her lips, helping her swallow the pills.
At some point, Tang Xing had returned with a damp towel, which he handed to him. “Young Master Sui.”
Huo Yanfang placed the towel on her forehead. Seeing her tiny face scrunched up in misery, he felt his heart ache.
“Dean Ye, is there anything we can do to make her more comfortable?”
Dean Ye shook his head. “That’s how fevers are. The body alternates between chills and heat. She’s already taken fever medicine. There’s nothing else to do. Let her sleep and sweat it out. If the fever breaks tomorrow, she’ll be fine.”
Unable to hold back, Di Jiaer asked, “What if it doesn’t break tomorrow?”
Dean Ye gave him a look reserved for idiots and dropped three words.
“Take her in.”
Di Jiaer fell silent.
Dean Ye asked again, “Why did you go out to sea on a day this cold?”
“Outside.” Huo Yanfang tucked the covers around Bai Lu. Just as he was about to stand, he noticed one of her small hands slipping out from beneath the blanket and gently catching hold of his coat.
“Sui… A-Sui… cold. So cold…”
Huo Yanfang sat back down and wrapped her in the covers, holding her close against his chest.
She rubbed her head against the hollow of his neck, and the features that had been tightly pinched gradually relaxed.
Huo Yanfang cast Di Jiaer a casual glance. “Speak.”
Di Jiaer told him everything he had seen. “He said his name was Huo Peicun.”
Before he had even finished speaking, Di Jiaer sensed the atmosphere in the bedroom turn strangely subtle.
Both Assistant Tang and Dean Ye wore peculiar expressions.
Huo Yanfang had been moistening Bai Lu’s lips with a wet cotton swab. He slowly raised his head and asked calmly, “Huo Peicun? Are you certain?”
Di Jiaer nodded emphatically. “Absolutely. He said it himself, and he arrogantly told me not to mistake him for anyone else. Brother Sui, you know him?”
“I do.” The corners of Huo Yanfang’s lips curved into a chilling smile. “Tang Xing.”
“Yes!” Tang Xing responded, turning around and leaving at once.
Dean Ye yawned. “I’m old now. I can’t stay up all night. Mr. Huo, check her temperature every three hours. Small fluctuations are normal, but if it goes above forty degrees, take her to the hospital immediately.”
He then said to Auntie Li, “Stay here tonight. It wouldn’t be convenient if it were only men.”
Auntie Li nodded. “I’ll make some soup. It’ll be good for her.”
Only the three of them remained in the bedroom.
Di Jiaer hesitated for a long while before softly calling, “Brother Sui…”
Huo Yanfang continued moistening Bai Lu’s lips with the damp cotton swab, not even lifting his head. “Hmm?”
“That… you…” Di Jiaer gritted his teeth. “That assistant, Tang Xing. I know him… I know Assistant Tang, though he doesn’t know me. I know who he is… so you and…”
Huo Yanfang summed it up succinctly. “A member of the Huo family.”
Di Jiaer wore an expression that said he had known it all along. “Brother Sui, you went on that variety show to pursue Little Lu too, didn’t you?”
Huo Yanfang slowly raised his eyelids.
Di Jiaer clenched his fist at him. “Come on, Brother Sui! Brother En and I are both supporting you!”
Huo Yanfang’s lips curved faintly, and he gave a silent laugh. “Hmm.”
“Yu Fuqing and Little Lu really are childhood sweethearts, but there’s no way Little Lu likes him. Brother Sui, you don’t need to pay any attention to Yu Fuqing. There’s only one person you need to watch out for.”
Huo Yanfang narrowed his eyes dangerously.
“Film Emperor Lu.” Di Jiaer warned him. “Little Lu absolutely adores Film Emperor Lu. Her phone wallpaper is a picture of him, and her password is even his birthday!”
Huo Yanfang raised an eyebrow.
“Er… I wasn’t deliberately snooping. I really just happened to see it.” Di Jiaer made his position clear. “Brother Sui, if you want to pursue Little Lu, you have to get past Film Emperor Lu first! Don’t worry, I’m definitely on your side. Film Emperor Lu is a fine man, but he’s too old. He and Little Lu aren’t suitable for each other.”
