Chapter 140: Your Father Has Returned to Settle Scores with the Sixth Young Master
Lai Jian’s expression flickered, but she controlled it well, letting it vanish in a flash.
Xiao Dan was ready to erupt on the spot, but Bai Lu patted the back of his hand. "Behave. Go on, I have everything under control."
Xiao Dan left, fuming.
The moment the door closed, Lai Jian sighed. "Xiao Lu, when your one-year contract is up, you won’t be renewing with Yu Xing Entertainment, will you?"
Bai Lu hummed a tune while brewing coffee in the open kitchen, acting as if she hadn’t heard.
Lai Jian shook her head, saying nothing more.
Smart and sharp-witted, Xiao Lu had long since seen through everything.
There was truly no point in trying to persuade a clever person. They understood everything; they knew everything. If they refused to let go, it was simply because the pain hadn’t cut deep enough yet. Once the pain became truly unbearable, they would let go, no matter how much they might regret it.
She feared this was the final chance Xiao Lu was giving Yu Fuqing.
Regrettably, Yu Fuqing was incapable of seizing it.
After all, not only was Shen Xinlu living in an apartment under Yu Fuqing’s name, but Yu Fuqing also spent nearly every day there, dallying with her.
Bai Lu brought a cup of coffee to Lai Jian and cradled a cup of hot milk for herself. "Sister Jian, try it and see if the strength is okay. I rarely use the coffee machine; I’m sure it won’t taste very good."
She had made coffee for her uncle and her father once before. It wasn’t a lack of filial piety, but her brew was so atrocious that it had made them both retch.
The Lu family bloodline simply lacked the "cooking" skill tree. It wasn’t that they hadn’t invested points into it; the skill simply didn't exist.
Lai Jian took a sip and promptly spat it back into the cup. "Do you have instant coffee? Make me a cup of that. If not, plain water will do."
Bai Lu: "..."
That was a brutal blow to her pride!
"Sister Jian, I..."
"Xiao Lu..."
They spoke in unison.
Lai Jian smiled and gestured. "You go first."
Bai Lu didn't stand on ceremony. "I want the company to stop giving Shen Xinlu any work, unless it’s work I choose to grant her."
Lai Jian: "A... 'bounty,' is that it?"
"Interpret it however you like, Sister Jian. If you want to think of it as me wanting to freeze Shen Xinlu out, that’s fine, too." Bai Lu offered a sweet smile. "In short, aside from the work I permit, I want Shen Xinlu to have no work at all."
Lai Jian agreed decisively. "No problem, consider it done." She paused, then asked, "Do you want me to keep this from President Yu?"
Bai Lu shrugged. "Doesn't matter. I don’t care what Yu Fuqing thinks. But it’s probably better not to hide it from him. If Shen Xinlu whispers sweet nothings in his ear, Sister Jian, you’ll be in a very difficult position, won't you?"
Lai Jian replied, "I believe that the professional value I demonstrate is still somewhat greater than Shen Xinlu’s. If President Yu asks, I will handle the explanation."
"Great. So, Sister Jian, what was it you wanted to tell me?"
"Gao Fanqin. President Gao."
Oh?
That was completely unexpected.
Lai Jian confessed that the screenshot of the IDs circulating online had nothing to do with Yu Xing Entertainment.
She had ordered an investigation, but it was impossible to find the source quickly. However, Lai Jian couldn't wait; if she let these anonymous trolls continue, Bai Lu’s reputation with the public would collapse.
Lai Jian knew that whoever was targeting Bai Lu had to be someone within the industry. So, she took it upon herself to post that tweet—one that seemed small in scope but was actually far-reaching.
Her intention was to scare the culprit. After all, identifying who was targeting Bai Lu was just a matter of time. She hoped the other party would back off, as things would get ugly if they were forced to tear off the mask.
Unexpectedly, in tandem with her tweet, that screenshot of hundreds of IDs began circulating online. It was only this morning that Lai Jian discovered the screenshot had been leaked by Gao Fanqin.
Lai Jian was very candid, almost excessively so. She even said, "Xiao Lu, I actually want to suggest that you seriously consider President Gao. He isn't just an ace agent; he is a factory for Best Actors and Actresses. Half the award-winners in the industry were either cultivated by him personally or discovered through his keen eye. Since you are determined to be a great actress, President Gao is undoubtedly one of the most suitable choices for you."
She added, "You are an artist under Yu Xing Entertainment, which technically makes you a rival to Gao. Yet, he helped you, and he did it without asking for any reward. He didn't even try to make you feel indebted to him; it was only because I investigated that I found out it was him. If I hadn't told you, the credit would have gone to Yu Xing Entertainment. There is no reason to doubt his intentions toward you. If you go with him, you can certainly rest easy."
Lai Jian did add a word of defense for her employer, Yu Xing Entertainment: "Of course, Yu Xing is also one of the most suitable choices. As one of the three giants of the domestic entertainment industry, it has the strength and resources. Its star-making machine is aggressive and dominant. There is no resource Yu Xing cannot secure; there is only the one you might not want."
But compared to her praise for Gao Fanqin, it sounded far too pale.
Having said her piece, Lai Jian rose to leave.
Bai Lu walked her to the elevator. She couldn't help but ask, "Sister Jian, why tell me all this? Aren't you the right-hand woman trusted most by the Yu father and son?"
The elevator arrived. As Lai Jian stepped inside, she said coolly, "The reason is simple: I am your agent. Planning your future and providing what I believe to be the most appropriate advice is part of my job."
As she finished, the elevator doors slid shut.
Bai Lu felt that urge to poach someone stirring within her again!
She didn't head back to unit 444. Instead, she waited for the elevator, intending to go to 888 to join the richest man for dinner.
Wait!
The richest man... a female celebrity... joining him for dinner...
Why did that sound so... so much like a "transaction"?
Bai Lu forced her mind to wander to random thoughts just to keep her legs from running away.
What to do! She really wasn't prepared to face that "immortal" man!
She was afraid she would make a mistake!
Auntie Li opened the door, which made Bai Lu breathe a slight sigh of relief. She poked her head in, and Auntie Li pulled her inside, saying, "The gentlemen haven't returned yet. They said traffic is heavy and it will probably be another half hour. If you're hungry, just eat; don't wait for them."
Bai Lu had just hummed in agreement when her phone rang. It was her uncle.
She jumped in fright.
Damn it!!!
Did her uncle have cameras installed on her? She had barely stepped into unit 888, not even three seconds later, and her uncle already knew?!
She hung up, and just as she began typing a message on WeChat, her uncle’s message popped up.
—Uncle Gu: No matter what you are discussing with your agent, pick up the phone immediately. Your father knows about the Sixth Young Master of the Huo family pushing you off the deck. He has already boarded the earliest flight to the capital to settle the score with him.
This was going to lead to a death!
With her father’s temper, if he actually found Huo Peicun, one of them would have to die.
Huo Peicun was a piece of trash, and if he died, so be it.
But murder meant a life for a life; her father couldn't be a killer!
"Auntie Li! I have an emergency! Please tell Mr. Huo that I’ll come back to kneel and apologize as soon as I'm done!" Leaving those words behind, Bai Lu turned and bolted.
She called her uncle back. He answered instantly, his tone almost commanding: "The plane lands in half an hour. Get to the airport now. I’m already on the way. We must intercept your father at the airport."
"Got it!"
