Chapter 104: Leave It to Me

He Yunqing halted in her tracks. Raising her eyes, she saw Jiang Yao standing at the hospital room’s doorway.

Nurse Cai sighed softly. “Miss Jiang, are you alright?”

Jiang Yao seemed as if she hadn’t heard a thing. “It’s just a superficial injury. The doctor said it’s nothing serious.”

“Nothing serious,” Nurse Cai repeated, as if deliberately saying it for He Yunqing’s benefit.

“Well, you two talk. I’ll be going now.” Nurse Cai nodded to Jiang Yao, then shook her head as she left the hospital.

Jiang Yao stepped aside to make way, gesturing for He Yunqing to enter the room. “How did you know I was hurt?”

She had specifically told Jin Nana to keep it a secret.

“Were you planning to keep it from me forever?” He Yunqing’s face was stern as he looked at Jiang Yao’s head, almost wrapped like a boiled egg. He pursed his lips, softening his tone a bit. “Don’t forget, this is Huai’an Hospital.”

Jiang Yao smiled brightly. “I was just worried you’d be upset.”

He Yunqing glanced at her helplessly. “Just a superficial injury?”

Jiang Yao nodded repeatedly. “Yes, really, just a superficial injury. I don’t feel any pain now.”

Perhaps her nodding was too vigorous, causing the wound to be pulled once more.

Jiang Yao winced instinctively.

“Don’t move,” He Yunqing warned gently. “Injured like this and still fidgeting.”

The man lowered his head, carefully examining her injury. “Fortunately, it’s nothing serious.”

“I told you it was nothing, right?” Jiang Yao lifted her delicate face with pride. “Not only that, I gave those two a good scolding!”

“Who were the people who hit you?” He Yunqing frowned. “Why did they do it?”

Jiang Yao opened her mouth, then smiled awkwardly. “I don’t know. Maybe they’re just troubled and bored.”

“You don’t know?” He Yunqing scrutinized her with disbelief.

Jiang Yao waved her hand. “Oh, I really don’t know. Life is stressful these days; it’s normal for some people to have mental issues. Anyway, I’m fine now. Let’s leave it at that. I’ll be more careful next time.”

“That won’t do,” He Yunqing objected firmly. “If I can’t even protect my own girlfriend, what kind of man am I? I’ll get to the bottom of this.”

“Don’t bother investigating,” Jin Nana entered, pushing the door open just as He Yunqing finished speaking.

Seeing He Yunqing and Jiang Yao together, she rolled her eyes and walked over to He Yunqing. “Is there anything the Jin family can’t find out? The attackers have already been caught. Turns out, they were your fans.”

“Hm?” He Yunqing frowned.

Jin Nana glanced at Jiang Yao, then took out a photo and handed it to He Yunqing. “Because of this photo, those people thought Miss Jiang was your girlfriend and were unhappy about it. They said they wanted to teach her a lesson. But Miss Jiang turned out to be a fierce fighter. In the end, they had to knock her out with a single stick.”

Jiang Yao desperately gave Jin Nana a meaningful look.

She thought to herself, I asked you to keep it from He Yunqing, but why did you spill everything like a sieve?

“Alright, stop winking at me,” Jin Nana raised her eyebrows at Jiang Yao. “Even if I hadn’t said anything, Yunqing would have found out himself. Why make it harder for him?”

Jiang Yao pouted. “Ah... actually...”

He Yunqing put down the photo, his gaze full of tenderness as he looked at Jiang Yao. “Leave this matter to me.”

With that, the man strode out of the hospital room.

“Hey, He Yunqing, He Yunqing...” Jiang Yao called after him.

“Stop calling,” Jin Nana pulled her back. “Do you want the whole hospital to know that He Yunqing is here with you? Just rest here honestly.”

She set down the things she was carrying on the table and opened them—porridge and several small dishes.

“Huai’an Hospital is great in many ways, but the patients’ food is unbearably bad,” Jin Nana said as she gently stirred the porridge with a spoon. “This place is different. Even the home-style dishes taste better than anywhere else.”

“Thank you,” Jiang Yao said, taking the spoon.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” Jin Nana rolled her eyes again. “Don’t you understand why I saved you and bought you food? No choice, I’m just that kind-hearted!”

Jiang Yao smiled softly and lowered her head to eat quietly.

In truth, Jin Nana hadn’t really done anything to her; at this moment, she even seemed somewhat kind and endearing.

If it weren’t for their awkward social statuses, perhaps they could have been friends.

“Is it good?” Jin Nana looked at her expectantly, her face eager for praise.

Jiang Yao nodded.

Jin Nana smiled happily, casually sitting on the edge of the hospital bed, swinging her legs in the air. “Yunqing also loves this.”

“Hey, Jiang Yao, did this scare you?”

Jiang Yao shook her head.

She had seen far scarier things.

Thinking about it, at barely over twenty years old, she seemed to have experienced what many might never face in a lifetime.

Jin Nana ignored her and went on, “If you’re scared, just admit it. I’m not. When I become Yunqing’s girlfriend, if anyone dares to treat me like that, I’ll have my dad dig up their ancestors’ graves.”

“Sounds like your father really dotes on you.”

Jiang Yao suddenly felt a pang of envy. For her, “father” was an utterly foreign word.

From the moment she was born, she was destined never to know it.

“Of course,” Jin Nana said proudly and smugly, “my dad is the person in the world who loves me the most. Whatever I want, he gives me.”

Jiang Yao believed her. The Jin family’s influence was well-known, and Jin Nana clearly came from a wealthy upbringing.

“Why don’t you ask him for He Yunqing?” Jiang Yao teased, her eyes twinkling.

“You...” Jin Nana’s beautiful brows furrowed. “You shouldn’t be saying things like that to me. I wasted my effort saving you!”

Jiang Yao held her hands up in thanks. “Okay, okay, thank you, Miss Jin, for saving my life.”

Only then did Jin Nana laugh. “I’m sorry about what happened at the He family last time. It caused you so much trouble.”

Jiang Yao knew well that last time was probably a setup by Irene, meant to embarrass her.

Still, she shouldn’t have risked Jin Nana’s life.

Unexpectedly, Jin Nana took the initiative to apologize.

“I’m the one who should apologize. If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have suffered that ordeal.”

They exchanged a glance and shared a knowing smile.

“What are you two talking about?” A hoarse middle-aged man’s voice came from outside.

The next moment, Master Jin entered, looking affectionately at his daughter with a smile. “You said you wanted to eat Dad’s famous tomato beef brisket tonight, but after the brisket was ready, you sneaked off without saying a word.”

Jin Nana pretended to be a child, stepping forward to hug Master Jin’s neck. “Dad, I’m coming right back. Didn’t I come out to do a good deed?”
