Chapter 90: Why Aren’t You Scolding Me?
"Stop arguing and call an ambulance!" Hebe barked.
Aileen shot Jiang Yao another glare, then took out her phone and dialed emergency services.
By then, Jenna's face had already gone deathly pale.
"Nana, Nana..." Hebe reached out and shook her, and when she still gave no response, he bent over her and began giving her mouth-to-mouth, over and over.
The ambulance arrived in a wail not long after.
Jenna was lifted onto the stretcher and rushed into the emergency room.
A crowd gathered in the corridor, pacing back and forth in anxiety like ants on a hot pan.
When Mrs. King heard the news, she hurried over as well, standing outside the emergency room and wiping away tears. "Everyone knows Nana is allergic to peanuts. She's always been so careful. How could this suddenly happen?"
Aileen let out a soft sigh and comforted her. "Auntie King, please don't worry. Nana is such a kind girl. Heaven would never let anything happen to her."
Mrs. King sighed and nodded, taking Aileen's hand. "You're such a thoughtful, good child. But how on earth could Nana have a peanut allergy out of nowhere?"
Aileen looked as though she wanted to speak but held back, then turned to glance at Jodie, who was standing off to the side.
"What is it?" Mrs. King instantly caught the faint change in her expression and followed her gaze to Jodie. "Who is this young lady?"
Aileen took Mrs. King's hand and shook her head. "Forget it, Auntie King. Right now the important thing is that Nana be all right. We can talk about everything else later."
"Forget it?" Mrs. King's brows tightened at once. "What do you mean, forget it? Are you saying Nana looks like this because of her?"
Aileen gave a noncommittal look. "Auntie King, please don't get agitated."
"How can I not be agitated? My daughter has already been harmed to this point!" With red-rimmed eyes, Mrs. King walked up to Jodie. "Miss, I don't know how Nana offended you, but for you to use such vicious means..."
"Auntie!" Aileen hurried to stop her. "Actually, this is all my fault. This young lady likes Hebe. I told her that Nana and Hebe grew up together as childhood sweethearts, so she might have felt upset about it, and so..."
"So that gives her the right to hurt someone?" Mrs. King grew even angrier after hearing this, glaring furiously at Jodie. "I don't know whether you've heard this before, but if our King family so much as sneezes, the whole city shakes. No one has ever dared to bully my daughter like this! If anything happens to Nana, I won't let you off!"
Jodie did not retort.
For some reason, she suddenly felt a deep envy for Jenna.
Not for her family background, but for having a mother who would charge into battle for her at any moment, anywhere.
"Please rest assured, Miss King will be fine," Jodie said calmly. "If anything does happen, then I hope you will absolutely not let off the person who secretly put peanut milk into her cup."
With that, Jodie looked quietly toward Aileen beside her.
"What do you mean by that?" Mrs. King frowned.
Aileen avoided Jodie's eyes and supported Mrs. King toward the side. "Auntie King, let me help you over there to rest for a moment."
At that moment, Hebe returned from paying the bill.
Just then, the doors of the emergency room opened.
Hebe glanced at Jodie, who was leaning against the wall, then hurried past her to meet the doctor and ask about Jenna's condition in detail.
"Luckily she was brought in in time. Miss King is out of danger now. We'll send her for an IV, and once the infusion is finished, she can leave. She just needs to rest well for the next few days."
At this, everyone let out a sigh of relief.
They crowded around Jenna and returned to the ward.
Jodie walked at the very back by herself. In a place like this, she was truly an outsider.
"Miss Jodie." Behind her came the somewhat aged voice of a man.
Jodie turned and saw that Mr. King had somehow appeared behind her.
She inclined herself politely. "You've come to question me too, haven't you? I know that no matter what I say, no one will believe I did nothing. But I still have to say it: I didn't do it. As for whether you believe me, that's your business."
Mr. King smiled faintly. "I believe you."
Jodie froze.
Since this incident began, he was the first person to say he believed her.
What was more, this person was Jenna's father, a complete stranger to Jodie.
"Why would you..."
Mr. King waved a hand. "I'm not yet so senile that I can't think clearly. I believe you, Miss Jodie, are not a fool either. Even if you were deeply displeased, you wouldn't have caused such a scene on your very first visit to the Harts' house."
Jodie curved her lips into a smile. As expected, experience spoke louder than youth.
"Then why did you stop me?"
"What happened tonight has wronged you. Since this began with Nana, let me apologize to you on her behalf." Mr. King spoke gently.
Jodie quickly waved her hands. "No, no, how could I possibly deserve that?"
"Where are you from, Miss Jodie?" Mr. King considered her for a moment. "Although this is our first meeting, you somehow seem very familiar to me."
Jodie scratched her head. "Then you must be mistaken. This really is the first time I've met you."
Mr. King nodded. "It seems I'm truly getting old. Come on, shall we go in and see Nana together?"
Jodie shook her head and glanced into the ward. "I think I'd better not go in. I'm afraid no one in there would welcome me."
"Very well." Mr. King thought for a moment. "Don't take what happened tonight to heart."
Jodie gave a polite nod and watched as Mr. King entered the ward.
For some reason, she suddenly felt that the older Mr. King looked, the more kindly familiar he seemed.
On the rooftop terrace of the hospital.
Jodie sat there alone in a daze.
Across the way, the building was still playing the commercial Hebe had filmed.
In it, Hebe's handsome face was frozen in the final frame.
Jodie looked at that face, then thought of Jenna's innocent, radiant expression.
If the two of them stood together, they would surely be a perfect match, wouldn't they?
Jodie suddenly felt a little envious of Jenna. At the very least, Jenna could still remain innocent and bright, while she herself had long since ceased to be that kind of person.
Behind her came the rustle of footsteps.
Hearing them, Jodie did not turn around. Instead, she lifted her small face slightly.
"Why are you hiding here all by yourself?" The man's magnetic voice sounded beside her ear.
Jodie rested her chin in her hand. "The view is nice here. The moon is bright, the stars are sparkling, and the person on the commercial is handsome too."
The man beside her gave a low laugh. "Is it the person in the ad who's handsome, or the person standing in front of you?"
Jodie turned her head and met the tender softness in Hebe's eyes. "Why aren't you scolding me?"
"Hmm?" Hebe narrowed those long eyes slightly. "There are actually people who like being scolded by me? What an odd habit."
"Of course," Jodie said, puffing out her cheeks. "I'm cold-blooded and ruthless. I secretly added peanut milk to your childhood sweetheart's cup and nearly killed her. Shouldn't I be scolded?" She looked up at him. "Go on, scold me."
