In reality, Electric Fan was not asleep at all; it was closely monitoring Zhang Congwen’s every move. It goes without saying that after being treated the way it was the moment Zhang entered the house, it would have been a miracle if the dog could actually sleep.

Although he hadn’t observed the dog closely, Zhang understood exactly what was going through its mind. While the dog was busy plotting its next move, Zhang decided to seize the initiative.

He asked the dog’s owner to sit beside Electric Fan. If the dog remained calm, it would show a level of trust in humans; if it reacted instantly, it would confirm that it trusted no one.

Electric Fan proved to be the latter.

The moment its owner sat down, the dog’s head snapped up. While it displayed no outward emotion, this single movement revealed it had been in a state of constant alert.

Seeing this, Zhang remarked, "When I first came in, it barked at me incessantly—it wanted you to drive me out. Instead, you obeyed my instructions, and now it is showing its dissatisfaction toward you."

This behavior stemmed from the fact that in the past, the owner had always yielded to the dog’s every whim. But since Zhang’s arrival, the dog had met resistance at every turn, and it had redirected its fury toward its owner. In the dog’s eyes, this change in the owner threatened its status within the household. As it lay there feigning sleep, Electric Fan had been waiting for an opportunity—a chance to reclaim its dominance.

Zhang, being an expert on canine behavior, knew exactly what the dog was thinking. This time, however, he chose not to suppress that impulse; he intended to let the dog have its way.

Zhang sneered inwardly. *If you want a chance to prove yourself, I will give you one.*

He set up a small, enclosed space using a portable fence. He instructed the owner to put on bite-resistant gloves and enter the enclosure with the dog. He then had the owner hold the dog’s collar and gently stroke its cheek, hoping to see if the dog could be coaxed into relaxing.

Predictably, the dog did not relax. Instead, it lunged and viciously attacked the hand holding the collar.

People can avoid heaven’s disasters, but they cannot escape the consequences of their own actions. Zhang had hoped for a gentler training method, but the ferocity with which the dog bit its owner—a truly lethal intent—made it clear that there was no longer any affection between them.

Since that was the case, Zhang saw no reason for leniency. He prepared to take over the training himself. When owners train their own dogs, their underlying affection often leads to hesitation. Zhang, however, had no emotional attachment to Electric Fan, meaning he would show no mercy.

He called the owner out and stepped into the enclosure himself, wearing the protective gloves. Without preamble, he used his gloved hands to corner the dog.

Electric Fan did not back down, snapping and tearing at his hands. It must be understood that "bite-resistant" does not mean "bite-proof," nor does it prevent the force of the bite from causing damage. It merely minimizes the harm. Even through the thick material, Zhang could feel the crushing force of the dog’s jaws, sending waves of intense pain through his hands.

Despite this, Zhang did not stop. No matter how hard the dog tore at him, he did not retreat an inch. Sometimes, a trainer must resort to trading pain for control; otherwise, the dog’s innate viciousness can never be suppressed.

As the dog’s resistance grew more desperate, it nearly bit Zhang’s leg. Seeing this, Zhang dropped to his knees and applied pressure with both hands. The dog was completely out of control, and one hand was no longer enough. Zhang discarded the collar, grabbed the dog’s neck with both hands, and lifted its forequarters off the ground. He hoped to display absolute dominance, forcing the dog to realize it was outmatched and to calm down.

But he had underestimated the dog’s madness. After only a few seconds, the dog began to struggle even more violently. Its true ferocity was finally on full display.

"Ah... ah... ah..."

Though his grip on its neck made breathing difficult, the dog emitted a piercing, guttural sound. Its mouth was wide open, exposing sharp white teeth and raw, red gums. It looked as though only one of them would leave this enclosure alive.

The dog thrashed its head, trying to break free. In the ensuing struggle, it succeeded. It managed to engulf almost Zhang’s entire right hand in its jaws. To make matters worse, it bit down right near a previous injury. The sharp, searing pain caused Zhang to loosen his grip, and the dog broke free.

Having tasted victory once, the dog’s confidence surged. Under normal circumstances, continuing the suppression at this moment would be unwise, as it would only trigger a more ferocious counterattack.

But today, Zhang was determined to do the opposite.

After a brief pause, he resumed the suppression. Just as expected, the dog’s counterattack was even more violent and unhinged. Having learned his lesson, Zhang avoided using his injured hand, relying on only one hand to pin the dog down. With a dog this deranged, single-handed suppression was impossible. Zhang knew this; his goal was no longer to dominate in that moment, but to exhaust the dog’s stamina.

One minute passed... two minutes... five minutes...

Finally, the dog’s energy hit rock bottom. Seeing this, Zhang ended the suppression. He stepped out of the enclosure and removed the protective gloves to reveal a gruesome sight. Despite the gear, and despite trying to avoid the dog’s teeth during the second round, his hands were covered in deep, purple bruises. In some places, the skin had been torn, and in the worst spot, the flesh had been ripped open.

Electric Fan was not a large dog—it was among the smallest of the medium breeds. That a dog of this size could inflict such damage spoke volumes about its temperament.

Refusing to give up, Zhang took only a short rest before acting again. He took a leash and fashioned a simple slip lead. A slip lead is a potent tool; the loop around the dog’s neck is a running noose. If the dog obeys, it feels no pressure. If it resists, the handler can tighten the lead, constricting the collar to choke the dog. The more the dog struggles, the tighter the hold becomes.
