Chapter Nine: The Thunderous Tears
The Crown Prince Mao’s display was truly beyond comparison. Others either flicked their palms like Mao Xuanzi, or played simple notes like Fang Zhe, or wielded an ice blade in one hand and an ice sphere in the other like Han Tianyue. As for Feng Shang, it was a different matter—his best effort was to elevate the storm to a vortex storm. He welcomed this vortex storm eagerly, as it greatly aided in speeding their escape. Against the monsters or men they currently faced, employing the vortex storm made it nearly impossible for anyone to catch up. With such speed, the Crown Prince Mao quickly widened the distance between them.
As Han Tianyue, Mao Xuanzi, and Fang Zhe marveled at how far the Crown Prince had pulled ahead, a woman dressed in white exclaimed in awe, "To wipe out all ten Overlord Flowers with a single move—truly a divine being!"
Meanwhile, Han Tianyue and the others, having been temporarily secured thanks to the Crown Prince Mao’s swift elimination of the Overlord Flowers, felt a momentary relief. But over on Feng Shang’s side, an earth-shattering event unfolded.
“Leimin! Leimin!” a man lying unconscious on the ground kept calling out the name desperately.
Feng Shang didn’t know who Leimin was or what relation she bore to the man. He patted him gently and said, “Stop calling out. You’re locked in here with me now. No matter how much you shout, no one’s coming to save you!”
Indeed, Feng Shang had called out to Han Tianyue, Mao Xuanzi, and Fang Zhe, but none had appeared. Either they had abandoned him, or the guards were too strict to get through. Feng Shang preferred to believe the latter.
The man opened his eyes and looked at Feng Shang. “Who are you? How did you end up here?”
“Like you, I was captured and brought here,” Feng Shang replied.
Seeing the man’s honest expression and hearing the name he had been calling, Feng Shang burst out laughing. “I never thought such an honest man would be involved with the women of the Daughter Kingdom!”
“I’m not!” The man’s face darkened as he explained, “My name’s Leidong. I came out on a mission with my wife, Leimin. But on the way, we encountered a cursed star. After the cursed star took our mission, my wife chased after it and hasn’t returned since. To this day, I don’t know where she is!”
Leidong told everything plainly. It was obvious he was a very straightforward man, so much so that Feng Shang could easily coax him into sharing all his troubles.
“You honest fool, you’re no fun at all. Not only have you lost your wife, but now you have to wait like me to be buried!” Feng Shang sighed in sympathy.
Suddenly, Leidong turned and gazed across the cell at the corpse of a heavily punished female prisoner lying in a pool of blood, crying out, “Leimin!”
“Could that be your wife?” Feng Shang looked back at the lifeless woman. Though dead, her figure remained unchanged, her skin still pristine. Leidong, in contrast, had neither looks nor stature. Feng Shang thought to himself, if she were still alive, standing beside this man, she would surely choose someone as charming and dashing as himself.
Feng Shang silently indulged in this thought, but since the woman was dead, he walked behind Leidong and comforted him, “The dead cannot be brought back. You must grieve and move on.”
“Did she say anything before she died? We were locked in the same cell,” Leidong asked, his eyes filled with tenderness.
Moved by Leidong’s deep affection, Feng Shang felt touched. Though he had nearly been electrocuted when he touched her before death, and though she hadn’t spoken a word, Feng Shang decided to tell a comforting lie. Wearing a mournful expression, he said, “Your wife told me one thing before she left: that she’s gone, but she wants you to take good care of yourself. She loves you.”
Upon hearing this, Leidong’s tears flowed like a river.
Feng Shang wept as well. Though he knew it was a lie, the kindness behind it was profoundly moving.
“Leimin, my wife, rest in peace. I will avenge you!” Leidong wiped away his tears, lightning crackling across his body.
