Chapter Eleven: The Puppet on Strings

Clack, clack, clack! As Jindi and Han Tianyue entered the deep cave, a group of puppets strode toward them.
“How are there so many puppets in here!” Before anyone could ready themselves, the puppets lunged at them.
Jindi swung his fist, smashing the attacking puppet to pieces in one heavy blow.
Another puppet appeared.
Mao Xuanzi launched his “Scorching Palm,” and instantly the puppet rushing at him disintegrated into ash.
Two more descended from above.
Fang Zhe and Feng Shang moved left and right; a wave of sound and a gust of wind struck. One puppet was snapped in half by the sonic attack, the other was hurled against the stone wall and shattered.
But soon after, the smashed puppets reassembled themselves, and the ashes from the burned ones fused together to form gray puppets, which continued to pounce.
“What are we supposed to do!” Everyone used their skills to drive back the puppets. Though the puppets broke easily, their automatic repair was even faster.
“This isn’t going to work if we keep this up!” Fang Zhe shouted.
Standing at the back, Duona looked around and said, “These are marionettes—they’re controlled by strings!”
Everyone glanced up, and only then noticed that above each puppet hovered countless hair-thin threads.

“Ring of Fire!” Mao Xuanzi again unleashed the Prince Mao’s skill; the aura swept out in a wave, severing the strings above a swath of puppets, which instantly collapsed to the ground.
“This works!” Mao Xuanzi exclaimed, surveying the fallen puppets.
Everyone quickly imitated Mao Xuanzi, and soon the ground was littered with heaps of puppets. Advancing while attacking the strings above the puppets’ heads, they soon reached the heart of the puppet horde.
Just then, the previously fallen puppets stood up once more.
“How is this possible!” they cried in unison.
Duona realized that the strings were actually formed from a stream of true energy, and that this energy was being released from a formation embedded within the stone walls.
“It’s a formation!” Duona exclaimed.
Surrounded by puppets, there was no way back.
“Duona, aren’t you an expert in formations? See if you can break this one!” Fang Zhe called.
Duona examined the formation’s layout—it was so intricate that he knew it would take time to unravel it. He called out, “Give me a moment! These formations are fused with the stone walls. I need to study them carefully to break them!”
“Hurry up!” The puppets fell and reformed instantly, while Jindi and Han Tianyue needed time to use their skills.
“Is it done yet?” Shuixi shouted, charging forward with a wild rush that sent a mass of puppets sprawling.

Wang Chong gripped his twin blades. “Slice and Sever!” Two crossed arcs of blade swept through, and a row of puppets fell.
But inevitably, the puppets restored themselves.
Duona anxiously studied the formations, and discovered they were composed of countless smaller formations, each woven with numerous different seals, interlocking in layers. There was no way to break them all at once.
Han Tianyue snorted coldly, “Let me try this technique!”
“Frozen Wasteland!” As icy air spread in every direction, the entire stone cave was sealed in frost.
“It worked!” All the puppets were frozen in place.
But Han Tianyue said, “Quickly, everyone—leave this place! My Frozen Wasteland won’t hold for long!”
Duona abandoned his study of the formations and rushed deeper into the cave with Jindi and Han Tianyue.
