Chapter Forty-One: Qingfeng's Departure
The Black Mountain Sorcerer was dead, and Han Tianyue and the others could never forget that moment.
“Do you know where my daughter is?” The Elf King came before them and bent down to ask.
They were still trapped in the instant of the Black Mountain Sorcerer’s death—though calling it an instant was almost too long; it was less than that.
“They are too weak. They were frightened by my earlier strike!” The figure who had slain the Black Mountain Sorcerer wore a black cloak and hid his face. No one could see who he was; only that he had come like a black gale, and in a flash the Black Mountain Sorcerer had died by his hand.
“Reaper, thank you for your help this time,” the Elf King said gratefully.
So this was the Reaper, master of the Death Scythe. Just as the Black Mountain Sorcerer had arrogantly reached for the Elf King’s life, the Reaper had burst through his chest with lightning speed, killing him on the spot.
“I only care about my scythe.” With an icy voice, the Reaper passed by Han Tianyue. Even Han Tianyue, whose very essence was of ice, felt a chill so deep it seemed to seep into his bones.
Bearing the Death Scythe, the Reaper vanished before everyone’s eyes.
The Elf King’s finger remained suspended in the air as his purifying power moved through the souls of Mao Xuanzi, Boka, Fang Zhe, and Han Tianyue. Yet when it touched Han Tianyue’s soul, the Elf King suddenly widened his eyes, then quickly composed himself.
After the soul purification, Mao Xuanzi, Boka, Fang Zhe, and Han Tianyue finally calmed down. Looking at the Elf King, they said, “Princess Qingfeng went that way!” and pointed toward the direction Feng Shang and Qingfeng had gone.
The Elf King nodded, took them with him, and with a flash of spiritual light arrived beside the peach grove in an instant.
Peach blossoms drifted through the air, as though the flowers themselves were weeping. Spring had nowhere to come, and sorrow clung to every heart. Feng Shang had just helped the grieving Qingfeng to her feet and was about to go search for Han Tianyue and the others when he encountered the Elf King in the midst of the peach grove.
Seeing the Elf King, Qingfeng rushed forward and threw herself into his arms. “Father!”
“My dear daughter!” The Elf King held her tightly.
Feng Shang hurried over to Han Tianyue and the others and asked, “Are you all right? Did anything happen?”
They all shook their heads.
Only then did Feng Shang breathe easier.
“Father, they saved me!” Qingfeng stepped out of the Elf King’s embrace and said to him as she went to stand before Feng Shang and the others.
“We are deeply grateful to you.” The Elf King offered thanks in elven courtesy.
The elves who had come with him all paid their respects as well.
Han Tianyue, Fang Zhe, Mao Xuanzi, and Feng Shang returned the salute. Meanwhile, Boka glanced at Mao Xuanzi, then, unnoticed by the others, slipped quietly away from the peach grove.
By the time anyone realized it, Boka was already gone.
Mao Xuanzi looked up at the peach blossoms filling the sky, a trace of loss in his heart.
“You saved my daughter. We elves have nothing worthy enough to repay you with, so I will give each of you a Tear of the Forest Spirits. It can restore your souls at the moment they are shattered.” The Elf King produced four Tears of the Forest Spirits and handed them to Han Tianyue, Mao Xuanzi, Fang Zhe, and Feng Shang.
“I’m going back now!” Qingfeng walked up to Feng Shang, clasped his hands tightly in hers, and then left a deep kiss on his face. “I hope we can meet again.”
A flash of spiritual light passed through the grove, and the Elf King and Princess Qingfeng vanished within the peach blossoms.
Qingfeng had always clung to him, and now that she was gone, Feng Shang felt oddly unaccustomed to it.
“What, you miss her already after she’s only just left?” Fang Zhe teased as he stepped forward.
Feng Shang laughed. “Who in the world would miss that infuriating little troublemaker? Every time I end up with her, I’m the one who gets unlucky. Look, now that she’s gone, aren’t we all at peace?”
As he spoke, Feng Shang’s foot slipped, and he fell flat on the ground.
Everyone burst out laughing. “If you’re so clumsy yourself, don’t go blaming the elf princess! Hahaha!”
